Chapter 200
Amelia froze.
His lips brushed her… soft, desperate, fleeting – like a memory come to life. For a suspended heartbeat, the world stopped spinning.
The air thickened around them, drenched with the scent of his cologne and the faint trace of blood on his skin. His breath mingled with hers, warm and uneven, stirring something raw and forgotten deep inside her chest. For that single moment, she forgot to breathe. Every buried emotion….love, anger, loss-collided inside her, rising like a storm she could no longer contain.
Then reality hit. Hard.
Her eyes widened as her heart lurched painfully against her ribs. She gasped, her trembling palm shoving him back with more desperation than strength.
“Aiden, stop-” Her voice cracked, fragile as glass. “I can’t… I can’t do this.”
He stumbled a step back, breath heaving, shock flashing across his face. “Amelia-”
“No!” The word broke from her lips, fierce and trembling. Her chest rose and fell in quick, shallow breaths. “You can’t just—” She swallowed the lump clawing at her throat. “You can’t kiss me every time you’re hurting or lonely. That’s not how this works anymore.”
Her voice quivered, the words tasting like blood and betrayal.
Aiden stood frozen, eyes shining with regret and longing. The muscles in his jaw flexed, his throat bobbing before he managed to whisper, “I didn’t mean to… I just- you were so close, and I thought-”
“You thought what?” she cut in sharply, her eyes burning with unshed tears. “That one kiss would fix everything? That it would erase the pain, the memories, my mother’s death, the fact that I’m….” Her voice faltered, dropping into a whisper that nearly broke him. “… that I’m engaged to Damien?”
The words pierced like a blade. They weren’t just a reminder for him…they were a wound she reopened herself.
Silence stretched between them, heavy and suffocating. Only the uneven rhythm of their breathing filled the space.
Aiden took another step back, guilt darkening his gaze. His fingers twitched at his side, aching to reach for her but knowing he shouldn’t. “I’m sorry,” he murmured, his voice hoarse. “It just happened.”
“It shouldn’t have.” Her arms wrapped around herself, as if holding her heart together. “You can’t keep doing this to me, Aiden. I’m getting married! Just leave me alone!”
Her eyes shimmered, her lips trembling as she looked anywhere but at him. It wasn’t the kiss that broke her… it was the war she was losing inside herself. The woman who still loved him versus the one trying so hard to hate him and forget him.
Aiden dragged a hand through his hair, frustration and pain twiging his expression “You’re right,” he breathed. “I shouldn’t have touched you. I just…” His voice trailed off before breaking into a whisper. “I still love you, Amelia. No matter how hard I try not to.”
Her breath hitched. That was the truth she dreaded most.
Amelia turned away before he could see the tears escape down her cheek. “Then try harder,” she whispered, her voice barely holding steady. Because I can’t keep breaking every time you look at me like that with those eyes. She thought to herself.
She walked past him, her steps uneven, her fingers reaching for the doorknob. But when she turned it, it was locked and the key wasn’t there.
She turned around, her voice quiet, tight. “The key, Aiden.”
He exhaled shakily, pulled it from his pocket, and held it out. Their fingers brushed as she took it… just a second of contact, but enough to make her pulse trip.
Without another word, she unlocked the door and stepped through, her fingers brushing the doorframe to a love that refused to die quietly.
–
a silent farewell
For the first time since that day, Aiden didn’t stop her. He just watched. Watched her walk away while every part of him screamed not to let her go.
His hands raked through his hair before he punched the wall beside him, the impact echoing through the room. He swallowed hard, staring at the untouched food tray. The cupcake and muffin sat there… reminders of something gentle he’d tried to offer but failed to deliver.
He picked them up quietly, the pain in his chest almost unbearable, and walked out.
Outside, the cold air bit his skin. And there she was… Amelia, standing by his car, her arms crossed, fury burning in her eyes.
He’d wanted to say something, anything, but the words stuck in his throat. The more he spoke, the angrier she’d become. So he said nothing.
He froze under the weight of her anger, his chest rising and falling heavily. Then, quietly, he held out the small pack in his hands. “I just wanted to give you the muffins and the cake. You haven’t eaten since last night. Maybe… you can have this until you’re ready to eat.”
His voice softened, eyes searching hers with that same look that always made her heart stumble.
“No, I’m not hungry,” she said quickly. But her voice quivered, betraying her lie.
She turned to walk away, but his hand caught hers. The moment their skin touched, it felt like fire and electricity all at once. The contact sent a rush through her – heat prickling down her spine, her heartbeat tripping wildly.
She froze, turning to face him. Their eyes met, and she exhaled shakily. She knew him too well. If she didn’t take it, he wouldn’t stop until she did.
“Fine,” she murmured, reaching out. “Just give it to me.”
She took the bag and turned away, walking off before he could say anything else.
Aiden’s hand dropped to his side, empty, heavy.
Unbeknownst to either of them, Damien sat in his car nearby, watching everything unfold. His knuckles whitened against the steering wheel, fury igniting in his veins.
The moment Amelia disappeared into the hospital, Damien climbed out and strode toward Aiden. His expression was dark. murderous.
“Aiden!”
Aiden turned, and before he could react-
Damien’s fist collided with his jaw.
“How dare you!”
The sound echoed through the garage.
