“I don’t want Kenny guarding her only in Scabar,” Micah said, his eyes dark and deep. “If I’m ever not around, I want someone to protect her in my place.”
“Mr. Caldwell! You’ll be fine, absolutely fine!” Kieran called anxiously.
At that moment, the door to the diagnostic room opened. The attending physician walked out, face serious. “Mr. Caldwell, regarding your condition, we need to take some time to discuss it properly.”
nd talk.”
Micah’s expression remained calm as he slowly rose. “Let’s go in
In the office, the specialist sat across from Micah, his expression grave.
“Mr. Caldwell, I assume you’ve noticed that your vision is deteriorating faster than we previously estimated.”
Micah asked quietly, “How long until it’s completely gone?”
“Less than a year.”
Even though he had mentally prepared, hearing the number still sent a ripple through Micah.
He tugged at the corners of his mouth in a self–deprecating half–smile. “That’s sooner than expected.”
The doctor sighed deeply. “We’ve repeatedly advised you to take care of your eyes, but you ignored it. This is now the absolute limit your body can endure.”
Micah did not comment, simply asking, “Other than my eyes, is there anything else?”
“There is one more thing.”
The doctor paused for two seconds, as if struggling to say it. “Noah mentioned that you’re married.”
This time, a visible change crossed Micah’s usually calm face.
His large hand clenched on his knee, his voice sharp and urgent. “What do you mean?”
“Please remain calm. We’re only suggesting that, if you and Mrs. Caldwell plan to have a child, you should carefully consider your health. If you attempt to conceive without proper preparation, there’s a higher chance of passing on genetic issues to the child. These are probabilities, not certainties. Currently, there’s no guaranteed medical method to prevent this. The safest option is IVF for Mrs. Caldwell.”
Micah didn’t even pause. “Impossible!”
He was a doctor. He knew how physically and mentally taxing IVF was on a woman.
A child? He didn’t care about anything else.
There was no way he would let the woman he loved endure that kind of pain.

To him, Oriana was his entire world–vast in importance but with no room for anyone else.

His eyes darkened with a barely contained rage. His vision reddened as he forced himself to speak clearly and deliberately. “We can do without a child.”
The doctor, who had always been calm and seen Micah’s stable demeanor, was taken aback. He had never seen him lose control like this.
“Mr. Caldwell, calm down. This is something you can discuss with Mrs. Caldwell later. It requires a joint decision. And if Mrs. Caldwell favors Oriana, you must consider this carefully.”
Micah’s brows furrowed deeply. At that moment, his face slowly showed pain and regret, as if recalling something.

Oriana landed, retrieved her luggage, and met up successfully with Zara.
It had been days since they last saw each other, and they hugged tightly.
Zara was ecstatic, spinning Oriana around as she examined her. “Wow! Your husband’s been taking good care of you–your face is so rosy! Love really does make a person glow!”
Oriana’s ears flushed. “No, no. I’ve been busy every day, haven’t had time for love or anything like that.”
“Oh, still managing to keep your energy up while busy? Must be living really well!”
Zara said this with a mischievous wink and deliberately emphasized a certain word, leaving Oriana blushing furiously.
“No! Nothing like what you’re implying!”
Zara was stunned. “No way! You two have been openly affectionate for so long and haven’t. How does your husband even resist having such a delicate, gorgeous woman at his side?”
Seeing the topic heading into dangerous territory–and with people passing by–Oriana quickly covered her friend’s mouth.
“Zara! We’ll talk about this at home!”
“Fine! But when we get back, you’d better tell me everything, every little detail!”
Zara grabbed Oriana and sprinted toward the parking lot, practically flying. Her thirst for gossip was unquenchable.
Oriana hadn’t intended to go into details–she had only spoken casually.
Zara played some music in the car as she drove Oriana home.
Back in school, Zara often brought Oriana home, so her family was already familiar with her.

Zara’s parents, knowing Oriana would visit today, had asked the cook to prepare some of Oriana’s favorite dishes.
Oriana politely greeted them. “Mr. Radcliffe, Mrs. Radcliffe, hello.”
“Oriana, finally! Zara’s been talking about you hundreds of times every day. If you didn’t come back today, we’d have gone deaf from hearing about you!”
