A sudden blast of a car horn shattered the calm, followed by the harsh glare of flashing headlights from behind.

The driver swore under his breath. What the hell is this guy doing?

Before Oriana could even react, she instinctively bent forward, wrapping her arms tightly around Zara.

A deafening crash rang out. Their car jolted violently as a speeding sedan sideswiped them, sending their vehicle skidding halfway off the lane. Through the window, Oriana caught a glimpse of the other car as it lost control and slammed headfirst into the flower bed up ahead. The hood crumpled like paper, smoke curling into the night air.

Zara!Oriana cried out, immediately checking the woman in her arms.

Thankfully, Zara was still fast asleepdead to the world after a night of heavy drinking, blissfully unaware of the chaos around her.

Oriana exhaled shakily, relief flooding her chestuntil she heard the driver outside shouting, Call an ambulance! The driver’s bleeding badly!

She sprang into action. Quickly setting Zara back against the seat, Oriana grabbed her phone and dialed emergency services. Then she pushed open the car door and hurried toward the wrecked sedan.

But when she reached the driver’s side and saw the bloodied face inside, her steps faltered. Her eyes widened, pupils contracting in shock.

Grant?

It was himGrant. Blood streamed down from a gash on his forehead, trickling down his cheek.

He wasn’t completely unconscious. His eyes fluttered open, dazed and unfocused. Yet somehow, through the shattered glass, they found herOriana, standing just a few feet away, phone still clutched tightly in her trembling hand. For one long second, everything around her fell silent.

Then Oriana’s composure snapped back into place. She steadied her breathing, relayed their location to the emergency operator, and stepped closer to assess his condition.

Aside from the head wound, there didn’t seem to be any other visible injuries.

His bloodshot eyes followed Oriana’s every movement, as if he feared that if he so much as blinked, she might disappear forever.

When he saw her brow creasemistaking it for worry, for concernhis cracked, bloodstained lips curved weakly into a smile.

OrianaI knew you wouldn’t leave me.”

The driver, crouched beside the wreck, looked up in surprise. You two know each other?

No.Oriana’s voice was flat, almost chilling.

Without hesitation, she located the source of the bleeding on Grant’s forehead, grabbed a towel from the passenger seat, and pressed it firmly against the wound. Her movements were brisk, efficientdevoid of hesitation or sympathy.

Grant let out a low groan, his body tensing under the pain. His handsome features twisted, the brief smile vanishing as the pain overwhelmed him.

A moment later, his eyes rolled back, and he went completely still.

The driver swallowed hard, glancing between the unconscious man and Oriana, who knelt beside him with an expression as calm as if nothing had happened. The sight sent a faint chill through him.

Moments later, the wail of sirens cut through the night. Red and blue lights washed over the scene as the ambulance and police arrived.

Do you

know the driver who caused the accident?one of the officers asked.

No,Oriana answered before the driver could. He came speeding from behind and crashed straight into the barrier.

The driver nodded quickly, adding, Yeah, that’s right. He lost control all on his own.

Alright, the officer said, jotting something down. We’ll confirm responsibility later. Anyone injured should go with the ambulance.

We’re fine,Oriana replied.

Okay. Then please leave a contact number and sign here before you go.”

Oriana took the clipboard, signed her name with steady hands, and handed it back. Without

another glance at the wreckor at the man lying motionless insideshe turned to leave. Just then, a ringtone buzzed from Oriana’s pocket. The young police officer who had been taking notes frowned, clearly irritated. He waved a freshly unlocked phone toward her.

Are you sure you don’t know him? You’re listed as his primary emergency contact, Ms. Sterling.

Oriana was speechless.

Feeling responsible, she reluctantly agreed to go to the hospital.

She couldn’t leave Zara alone, so she brought the girl along. There were empty beds in the emergency ward, and Zara could continue her nap there.

Grant was rushed off for treatment. About an hour later, he was moved to a ward, and Oriana followed the nurse to sign the consent forms.

The patient has a mild concussionnothing serious, the nurse said. He’s awake now. You can go in to see him.

Oriana stayed where she was. If he’s fine, she asked quietly, can I leave now?

The nurse gave her a puzzled look and was about to respond when a shout came from inside the ward. Family of Grant in Room 233! Hurryhe’s vomiting! We need a family member to handle it!

The nurse turned to Oriana with a firm tone. You can’t leave yet. Please take care of the hygiene issue first.
