Feeling a mix of embarrassment and an ominous chill at his neck, Kieran stiffened. He kept his gaze fixed downward and replied with practiced formality, “You are too kind, Mrs. Caldwell. My efforts are nothing compared to Mr. Caldwell’s boundless devotion to you.”
A knowing smile played on Oriana’s lips as she glanced at Micah.
“Come, sit and eat with us before it gets cold,” she offered.
Kieran was nearly startled out of his wits. “We’ve already eaten, thank you. Please, enjoy your meal.”
He turned to make a swift exit.
But as his hand touched the doorknob, he remembered something crucial and pivoted back.
“Mr. Caldwell, Mrs. Caldwell, the attacker, Sara Stewart, has been transferred to the municipal police headquarters. Eyewitnesses have accompanied her to provide statements. Legal counsel from both the Research Center and the Sterling family are already engaged. Senior attorneys have indicated they will pursue the maximum penalty and the revocation of her civil rights.
“Regarding Mr. Sullivan, his management has announced they will urgently convene a press conference tonight to formally issue a clarification and seek justice on your behalf, Mrs. Caldwell.”
He paused, glancing at his wristwatch. “It begins in ten minutes. The conference will be broadcast live across all major platforms simultaneously.”
Micah responded with detached calm. “Understood. You may go.”
Kieran gave a curt nod and closed the camper door firmly behind him.
Micah turned to Oriana. “Shall we watch the broadcast?”
She had already picked up the bowls. Serving him a portion of soup, she moved closer and began feeding him spoonful by spoonful. “Later. Let’s eat first. You said you were hungry.”
“Very well.”
Seeing her remain completely unmoved by Kai’s groveling attempts to appease her, Micah’s mood improved significantly. Being fed spoonful by spoonful by Oriana, he managed, for once, to finish a bowl of soup and a full serving of risotto.

After the meal, Oriana tidied up swiftly. She then had Micah turn so she could tend to his wound.
The wound looked slightly better than it had in the afternoon–less red and swollen–but it still stood out starkly against the smooth skin of his back. Oriana applied the ointment with utmost care. “Why did you come so suddenly without even telling me?”
“I was concerned. I wrapped up at the Center and came straight away,” Micah replied. “And I wanted to surprise you.”
Oriana’s grip on the cotton swab tightened slightly. “It was certainly… a shock,” she murmured.
“Hmm?”
“Never mind.”
After applying the cream, she blew gently on his skin to soothe it before helping him back into his shirt.
Her phone chimed. Recognizing the caller, she answered. “Zara.”
“Oriana! You almost gave me a heart attack!”
Zara’s voice boomed through the speaker, forcing Oriana to jerk the phone away and lower the volume.
Feeling a pang of guilt, she asked, “How did you find out?”
“Wait–so something did happen?! I knew it! Kai wouldn’t suddenly hold a tearful press conference declaring you’re his savior’s daughter and vowing to protect you forever unless something was wrong!”
Oriana was momentarily speechless.
So Zara had been bluffing to get the truth?
Hold on…
Oriana was still processing. “You said Kai held a press conference… publicly announced…”
“Yes, exactly,” Zara said, enunciating each word. “Now the whole world knows you’re the daughter of firefighter Niall Steele–the hero who died saving children during the Ashford Earthquake!
“And Kai’s fans? The ones who spent all morning tearing you to shreds? Now they’re tripping

over themselves to praise your family as saints who gave their idol a second chance at life. It’s ridiculous!”
Oriana could only sigh.
“Honestly, his fan army is terrifying,” Zara continued, clearly enjoying the drama. “Remember those gross posts this afternoon about you and those older gentlemen? His fans mobilized and annihilated the trolls. The nasty comments are already buried. I didn’t even get a chance to join the fight!”
She sounded genuinely put out.
