Micah sat beside her, inscrutable behind his sunglasses.

But when he followed Oriana’s lead–deadpan and stiffly parroting her apology–William and the others on the other end of the video call looked visibly unsettled.
“Ahem.”
Vice Dean Yousef Saunders, always the quickest to read the room, broke the silence. “Dr. Sterling, Mr. Caldwell, please, no need for that! The hospital shares some blame here, considering the rumors leaked from our side. We’re just relieved to see your bond is as strong as ever. We’re happy for you both!”
“Exactly,” William added. “As long as you haven’t let the gossip get to you. And as for Micah agreeing to treatment…”
William smiled genuinely. “That is wonderful news. You have my full support.”
“Thank you for understanding,” Oriana said. “However, I’ve disrupted the hospital’s operations and delayed the paper’s progress. That is on me, and I’m ready to accept whatever penalty is necessary.”
In truth, Oriana had already steeled herself for the worst–being stripped of her authorship on the international publication.
It was a sacrifice she couldn’t avoid, but one she was willing to make.
While Oriana braced herself with solemn resolve, William, Yousef, and the others exchanged subtle, knowing smiles.
Yousef winked at her playfully. “Dr. Sterling, don’t worry. Actually, the timing is quite serendipitous.”
Oriana blinked in confusion, looking toward William. “Professor?”
“There’s been a discrepancy between the theory proposed by the Meradin Lab and the practical data for this publication,” William explained. “The professors here have conflicting views and we’ve been at an impasse. Just the other day, Professor Cormac Flint suggested a covert re–verification of the experiment. We were struggling to decide who to send to Meradin to handle it…”
Having built up the suspense, William dropped the theatrics and looked at Oriana with a serious expression.
“The team has decided to entrust this re–verification to you, Oriana. This is a critical mission requiring absolute secrecy. Until the results are in, our investigation cannot be made public. Mishandling this could cause friction between the medical communities of both countries, or worse…
He didn’t finish the sentence, but he didn’t have to. Oriana understood the weight of the Meradin Lab’s authority. To challenge their findings without solid proof would be a slap in the face to their scholars and could shatter the collaborative relationship driving medical progress. She knew exactly how high the stakes were.
William asked again, “Do you have the confidence to see this through?”

It was hard to believe that someone as ordinary as her could be blessed with such good fortune, time and time again.
That is, until Micah leaned in, chuckling low in her ear. “It’s real. You’re not dreaming. You don’t need to pinch me to prove it.”

Oriana looked down and saw a red mark on the web of his hand where she had been gripping him. She quickly let go.
Meeting William’s gaze, she nodded firmly. “Yes, Professor. I won’t let you down.”
“This data might overturn Meradin’s conclusions, so be prepared for a difficult road ahead. We’ll also select suitable personnel to accompany you.”
“Understood. I’ll follow your lead.”
“It’s urgent. We’ve already coordinated with the Meradin Lab. They’ve accepted our challenge and granted you access to the original facilities. Pack your bags–you leave the day after tomorrow.”
The moment the call ended, Oriana turned and threw herself into Micah’s arms.
Her joy was palpable, practically radiating from her. It was clear how grateful she was to have regained an opportunity she thought was lost.
Micah narrowed his eyes in contentment, hugging her back. He basked in her happiness, feeling a profound sense of satisfaction that nothing else could match.
“Micah,” Oriana pulled back suddenly, suspicion dawning. “Did you ask Mr. Harris or Mr. Saunders to pull strings for me?”
Micah raised a brow, unable to resist pinching her cheek. “It’s only been one night, and you already don’t
trust me?”
Oriana stuck out her tongue, then hugged him again, feeling a bit guilty but smiling brightly. “It just feels like a dream, that’s all. Like Zara would say, happiness struck too suddenly.”
“Fair enough.”
Micah tapped her forehead, his usually cool eyes now swimming with warmth and attection.
