"I actually have plans tonight," Sampson politely declined.
"Since I just moved back, I'm still unpacking. Let me treat everyone to dinner another time."
Director Zachary didn't push. "Alright, let us know when you're free."
Wendy had just returned to the office after a pre-op consultation with a patient's family.
When she walked in, everyone was passing around treats.
"Director Sanders bought them. Every department in the cardiac center got some."
Riley had grabbed a portion for Wendy while snagging her own.
"They had coffee, milk tea, and soy milk. You're on your period, right? I grabbed the hot soy milk for you."
Hardly anyone had opted for the soy milk, leaving the rest piled on the table.
A colleague joked, "Who knew our Director Sanders was so health-conscious? What young person drinks soy milk these days?"
Riley slid her chair right up to Wendy's and whispered, "Which is exactly why I strongly suspect Director Sanders slipped this in specifically for you."
It was the exact same brand as the one from that morning.
And it tasted infinitely better than the cafeteria sludge.
Wendy pulled out her phone and shot Sampson a text: [Thank you.]
They were both busy, so she didn't expect a quick reply.
However, in her unread notifications, Kimberly Watson had sent a message a few hours ago.
Kimberly: [Wendy, are you coming home this Sunday? Mom misses you.]
Wendy had repeated that she would never go back at least ten times in the last two months. She was sick of saying it.
She ignored the text.
Kimberly seemed to understand her silence, not sending another word for the next two days.
The mini-lecture ended early.
After confirming she hadn't missed any consults, Wendy called Sampson.
"I can take a thirty-minute break right now. Are you available?"
"Yes."
The background noise on Sampson's end sounded identical to hers.
"Bring the marriage certificate and meet me at the same spot. I'll be right there."
Wendy agreed. "Okay, let me put in my leave request first."
