Fair enough. Wendy understood his point and nodded.
But after two seconds of silence, she couldn't help staring at him and teasing, "Director Sanders, you definitely have the right to be a little arrogant."
"Is that a compliment?"
"Just stating the facts."
Sleep on a night shift was precious. Having said his piece, Sampson turned to leave.
His eyes landed on the suitcase that had been sitting by the door for two weeks.
As he reached for the handle, he asked, "One week left in your residency?"
Knowing he was asking about her move-in date, Wendy nodded. "Before New Year's."
"I'll put your luggage in my car and take it back for you."
Since they had already agreed he'd pick her up when she moved, Wendy didn't see any issue with the offer and nodded in agreement.
Being woken up to talk meant Wendy couldn't fall back asleep after he left.
She pulled out her phone and called Jade Sterling.
Since she wasn't asleep yet, Jade picked up immediately, launching straight into the gutter.
"Calling me in the middle of the night? If it's not a medical emergency, it's gotta be an illicit affair."
"It's not!" Wendy groaned.
She filled Jade in on the hospital gossip and Sampson's explanation.
Wendy said, "Even though I didn't take the rumors seriously and didn't need him to explain, it shows he respects women."
Riley's family ran a matchmaking agency. Over the last two years, Wendy had heard endless horror stories about awful men.
Many of them used women's affection as a badge of honor to show off, refusing to make a move but never rejecting them, either.
Sampson had every reason to be that arrogant, but he wasn't. Wendy appreciated that.
Jade only half-agreed with Wendy's glowing review of his gentlemanly conduct.
She said, "Maybe your precious doctor has just never been in a relationship. He's got zero experience, or maybe he has a low libido, so he's completely oblivious."
Wendy didn't argue.
This was the nightmare scenario for every chief resident.
After making the diagnosis, Wendy frantically contacted Dr. Laird Franklin and rushed into the OR.
After several hours of surgery, Wendy walked out completely drained of energy.
She collapsed into a chair in the farthest corner of the locker room to recover.
She had barely closed her eyes for a moment when the chatter of several scrub nurses woke her up.
"Why is everyone saying Director Sanders is married? Is it true?"
"Of course it's true."
An insider nurse shared the details. "The whole hallway saw it when he left work!"
"Director Sanders was wheeling out two suitcases from his office. Chief Lawrence thought he was going on a last-minute business trip and asked. The director said no, they were his wife's suitcases!"
"...Chief Gates."
The group of nurses had been laughing and gossiping, only noticing Wendy sitting in the corner after they finished their story.
