Everyone at the center knew Wendy wasn't the gossiping type.
The scrub nurses quickly dropped the subject.
But Wendy still found out.
When she got back to the office, Riley gave her the full rundown.
"I mean, Wendy, you two are way too public about this!"
"I was terrified Sophie would figure it out yesterday and tried so hard to cover for you. But you? You just hand your suitcase straight to Director Sanders."
Wendy explained, "...I didn't know he was going to use it for that."
If she had known, she never would have given it to him.
True, Sampson had no reason to keep their marriage a secret.
Riley looked a little worried. "...But since he made such a scene, won't people recognize your suitcase?"
"No." Wendy shook her head. "I just bought it."
"Oh, good." Riley let out a breath.
Then she muttered, "But honestly, the way he handled it was pretty smart. He saved Dr. Sawyer's pride while permanently shutting down the rumors."
Wendy was so exhausted that she hadn't even processed that layer of his actions.
She paused. Riley asked, "Now that he has your stuff, when are you actually moving in?"

Moving day fell on a Sunday.
No matter how many winter emergencies piled up, the department couldn't just work Wendy to death.
After working two weekends in a row, Sunday was supposed to be Victor Vance's day off. Dr. Franklin made him come in to cover for Wendy, finally giving her a break.
Since she still had a few days left in her residency, Wendy didn't rush to clear out her stuff from the on-call room.
Carrying a small tote with her pajamas, she headed to the parking garage.
Sampson's car was parked in its usual spot.
When Wendy opened the door and got in, he was looking down at his phone.
Since it was his day off, Sampson was dressed casually in a white t-shirt layered under a light gray cardigan.
His unstyled hair fell softly over his eyes.
The car smelled faintly of fresh body wash.
Accustomed to seeing him in crisp dress shirts and ties, Wendy couldn't help but stare at this relaxed, domestic version of him.
"Did you just wake up?"
Wendy nodded.
Because she wasn't used to the setup, she fumbled around, missing the sensor several times.
After the robotic voice prompted *Please scan your fingerprint* for the third time, Sampson gently grasped the back of her hand.
Freshly washed, his palm was cool against her skin.
Guiding her hand, he pressed her finger against a small groove behind the handle. "Right here."
Unused to the contact, Wendy instinctively curled her fingertips.
Sensing her hesitation, Sampson immediately let go once he helped her find the sensor.
Back in the living room, Sampson showed no intention of heading into the bedroom.
He looked at Wendy and said, "I have a lecture this afternoon and need to head out now. Catch up on your sleep. Should I have someone deliver food for you?"
"No need."
Wendy said, "I'll just order delivery when I wake up."
Sampson replied, "I'll text you the address, then."
Wendy nodded and stood up.
