Riley looked at Wendy and asked, "Did you order room service?"
Wendy shook her head. "No."
She had been soaking on the side closest to the stairs, so she grabbed her robe, slipped it on, and went to answer the door.
The hallway light spilled through the crack as she opened it.
Sampson stood in the corridor, one hand tucked casually into his pocket.
Because of his height, he blocked the overhead light, casting Wendy in a shadow.
Her eyes widened in shock. "What are you doing here?"
The colleagues sharing double rooms were all downstairs.
But Leo was still on this floor.
Wendy cast a nervous, paranoid glance down the hallway.
As she leaned out, the collar of her robe slipped, and Sampson instinctively reached out to pull it shut for her.
"If you're not busy, come to my room?"
?
"...Huh?" Wendy's brain completely short-circuited.
Sampson shook the phone in his hand.
"Mom wants to video call us. She's asked three times already."
"...Oh." Wendy let out a massive sigh of relief.
She asked him, "Do I need to change?"
"If you do, I'll wait."
"Don't bother. Your room is right next door."
There were people wandering all over the resort in bathrobes anyway, and she was perfectly covered up.
Wendy figured it was fine, so she didn't bother going back inside to change.
The two rooms were right next to each other.
Wendy hadn't paid attention when Leo booked the rooms.
She followed Sampson into his suite.
Winona's video call rang right on cue.
It wasn't anything urgent.
She just wanted to formally congratulate Wendy on wrapping up her rotation as chief resident.
Then she nagged them again about coming over for dinner next week.
She didn't mention Sampson once. It seemed both her son and her husband only existed in her life to serve as adequate background props for video calls.
Sampson raised an eyebrow, his gaze dropping to her screen, where his messages had been completely buried under a mountain of notifications from her colleague groups and patient chats.
He let out a low chuckle. "I did message you, Dr. Gates. You just completely ignored it."
Wendy awkwardly averted her eyes and whispered an explanation. "I was chatting with Mom earlier and didn't close the app. I assumed it was just group chat notifications."
"Right," Sampson nodded nonchalantly.
He held out his open palm in front of her.
"Hmm?" Wendy looked up, glancing at him.
The room's heating was turned up high, and Sampson had undone the top few buttons of his shirt.
Given their height difference, her line of sight fell perfectly on the faint, muscular curve of his chest peeking through the fabric.
"...What is it?" Wendy blinked.
Sampson didn't answer. He leaned down, staring directly into her eyes, and tapped a finger against her phone screen.
With two crisp taps, Sampson said, "Phone."
"Oh." Wendy obediently handed it over.
Sampson straightened up, tapped her screen twice, and handed it back.
"I pinned our chat to the top. Just to make sure you don't miss any important messages in the future."
