Wendy didn't need to be told; she had already noticed.
"Okay," she nodded.
A few damp strands of hair, wet from the hot spring, slipped loose and tickled her eyelids.
Wendy raised her hand to brush them away.
But a pair of large hands beat her to it.
Sampson gently swept the damp strand of hair and tucked it behind her ear.
"Don't worry. I only knocked on your door because I know Riley is fully aware of our relationship."
"If she didn't know, I wouldn't have gone over."
Sampson was explaining his actions, ensuring her that he was keeping his promise to maintain their secret marriage.
Wendy nodded again, and then it clicked. "...Wait, how did you know Riley knew?"
Sampson's expression turned incredibly complicated. He wanted to say that anyone with half a brain could see right through Riley.
But, worried that Wendy might stress over it, he swallowed his words and pivoted. "Just a guess. Isn't she your best friend?"
Everything that needed to be said was said.
And Riley was still alone in the room.
Wendy turned to leave. "I should head back."
"Tonight—"
Sampson only got halfway through his sentence when a loud gasp cut him off: "Chief Gates?!!!"
Wendy pulled the door open to find Leo standing right outside.
Leo's arm was frozen mid-air, perfectly poised to press the doorbell.
Seeing Wendy—dressed in a bathrobe—walking out of the married director's hotel room caused Leo to inhale sharply!
Wasn't the director married?!
What the hell was Dr. Gates doing in here?!!!
The medical elite circle was way too messy!
Catching the absolute panic in Leo's eyes, Wendy completely froze.
"You..."
"I knocked on the wrong door, didn't I?" Leo's eyes frantically darted up, down, left, and right, desperately searching for a room number to blame.
Wendy's lips parted, but her throat felt like it was blocked with cement. She couldn't form a single word.
"You didn't knock on the wrong door."
What a disaster.
Riley asked, "Did Leo figure it out?"
Wendy shook her head. "No."
"Sampson threw out some random medical excuse and completely derailed him."
Just remembering the absolute sheer panic of the moment made her heart hammer against her ribs.
"It's fine, it's fine." Riley could see how stressed Wendy was.
She tried to soothe her. "Relax, Leo's brain doesn't work fast enough to piece that together!"
There was no point stressing over something that had already happened. Riley told Wendy to drop the robe and come back into the water for a bit.
With her heart rate still soaring, Wendy wasn't in the mood.
"You stay in. I'm going to lie down for a second."
The two of them casually chatted through the open balcony doors.
Trying to distract her, Riley asked, "But wait, wasn't your mother-in-law just texting you? Why did she need to drag you over to Dr. Sanders' room for a video call on top of that?"
Wendy didn't think much of it. "She probably just wanted to invite us over for dinner."
