On the other side.
The second Wendy left, Sampson dialed his mother's number.
"Wendy?"
"It's me."
Hearing Sampson's voice, the tone on the other end of the line instantly dropped all pretenses and turned highly annoyed.
Winona: "What do you want?"
"Mom," Sampson's voice darkened. "Don't pull these little stunts next time."
If Winona hadn't orchestrated this entire scenario, Leo never would have terrified Wendy like that.
But Sampson kept that particular detail to himself.
He simply sounded incredibly displeased.
He was annoyed, but Winona was furious. "What stunts did I pull?"
Sampson pointed out coolly, "I saw your chat logs with Wendy from half an hour ago."
When Winona called earlier, she claimed she urgently needed to speak with Wendy but couldn't reach her, which was why he had to go track her down.
But clearly, that was a complete lie.
Being confronted by her own son didn't embarrass Winona in the slightest.
Her focus completely bypassed whatever point Sampson was trying to make.
"Hold on, what did you just say? You were looking at Wendy's chat logs?!"
Winona's voice pitched up in excitement. "Are you two already close enough that you're going through each other's phones?"
What on earth was she talking about? Sampson was speechless.
But Winona was already completely lost in her own fantasy.
"Having a strong emotional bond is fantastic!"
"But as your mother, I have to say something! You're a grown man, could you try not to be such a control freak?"
"Snooping through your partner's phone is incredibly tacky!"
"Mom."
Sampson cut her off. "We were talking about how I'd appreciate it if you didn't play these little tricks..."
"I know, I know!"
"Stop complaining when you got exactly what you wanted!"
"Checking your wife's phone is a massive turn-off! You need to have a serious talk with him."

Riley was still soaking in the pool.
With nothing else to do, Wendy lay in bed texting Jade.
After recounting the disaster with Leo, Wendy mentioned the awkward moment where she assumed Sampson was staring at her body in the robe, only to realize he just wanted her phone.
After hearing the story, Jade sensed something entirely different: [Babe, has it occurred to you that Sampson was definitely checking you out?]
Wendy briefly entertained the possibility.
Then immediately shot it down: [Impossible.]
Jade: [Why is that impossible? When he was working out the other day, are you telling me you didn't check out his chest and abs?]
Jade: [You're legally married. What's the harm in looking at each other?]
That single phrase—looking at each other—echoed in Wendy's head all afternoon, refusing to let her rest.
It was easy enough to catch a cab from the resort back to the city.
Since some people wanted to head straight to work the next morning, and others preferred to sleep in their own beds tonight...
