Chloe’s POV

The location of the guest rooms for the Alpha meet was at the other end of the pack and while we could take a car, Axel and I chose to walk.

Axel and I walked slowly beside each other, both of us taking in what had just happened.

Liam’s words rang över and over in my head.

I thought of the past three months. Everything I had done to make sure that I would be able to leave seamlessly and to be told to my face that it was all for nothing.

“Don’t,” Axel said quietly and I looked up at him.

“Don’t what?” I asked.

“Feel like a fool. Don’t do that,” he said.

I chuckled once and then, hunched over letting out a belly laugh. “Too late.” I straightened and through tears in my eyes, muttered. “I feel like an idiot. I could have just packed up and left months ago.”

“You did not know,” Axel said, stopping so he could face me. “They knew but for some reason, did not tell you.”

Even if the queen was in the dark as much as I was, the two men in her life knew about me and they knew how I truly was. Liam, even more, knew about my arrangement with Axel and left me to handle myself.

“Oh goddess,” I muttered, the tears pooling even more in my eyes. “This is not even a big deal. I’ve been eighteen all this while and so what? The King says he is my dad.”

I laughed, covering my face with my hands. “The King is my dad. He has known all this while that he had a daughter and he left my mother and me in abject poverty while he went on to govern the realm. Axel, you see how funny this is too, right?”

Axel pulled me into a hug and I burst into tears.

“Axel, they called me a princess. They said this is my home. Eighteen years and he finally thinks I am worthy enough to be acknowledged-”

“This has nothing to do with you,” Axel whispered, pressing chaste kisses to my forehead and head. “It has absolutely nothing to do with you. It is their loss not to have been in your life all this while.”

“But… he is the king,” I said through hiccups. “He is not my step-father or some random pack’s Alpha. I cannot just say no to him. It could put you in trouble.”

At that, a smile broke out on Axel’s face and he cupped my cheek. “Since when did you start worrying about me, Chloe? I kind of like that.”

Leave it to Axel to find a way to tease me at a moment like this.

Despite my deep frown, he continued. “You know, I thought the moment you heard you were eighteen already, you would pack up your bags and run away at first light tomorrow. I guess you have fallen in love with me, haven’t you?”

I knew he was making fun of me. I blame it on my emotions being heightened but this seemed a good time as any to confess that I did have feelings for him.

“Yes, and so what? That does not change a thing.”

I stayed silent, sniffling but Axel grabbed my shoulders, forcing me to look up at him. “I said that you have fallen in love with me and you said yes. Does yes have some other meaning that I am not aware of?”

My face grew hot and I pushed him away from me, stepping out of his reach.

“I want to take a nap. I’m tired-”

Axel’s arm slipped around my waist and he pulled me flush against him. His eyes were slightly dark, a hint of amusement in them. “Chloe, you do not get to say something like that and leave.”

I broke the intense eye contact so I could deescalate the situation or at least, tried to but the moment I turned my neck, his lips pressed against my jugular.

I sucked in a sharp breath, my grip tightening around his sleeves. Axel did not stop, kissing and biting my neck as he slipped down to my collarbone.

“I love you too, Chloe,” he whispered against my ear. “I do not know if I have mentioned that yet.”

I was not sure whose heart was pounding so loudly, whether it was his or mine or both our hearts beating in unison. He stepped so close that there was no space between our bodies.

My face burned but I was too weak to stop him, not that I was willing anyway.
