Liam’s hand tightened around my arm. His smile pressed into a thin line. “Mother… what are you talking about?”

The Queen turned to Liam with a raised brow. “What is the problem, Liam?” she asked calmly.

I looked between the two of them, wondering what the problem was and how exactly it involved me

“Is Isabella not my daughter? Or perhaps my step-daughter. Your father has a thing for birthing bastard daughters.”

The King walked in and dropped down on his seat. “Noelle, please be kind to Chloe. She has nothing to do with this. Chloe, sit. This dinner is for you.”

Axel entered the room behind him and moved to sit beside me. Riven and Sandra waved to me at the door before disappearing, leaving Axel and me with the royal family.

The dinner started quietly, the tension in the room thick enough to cut diamond. Every bite of the steak tasted like paper but I forced myself to shovel the food down my throat so I could get out of here sooner than later.

Just as the food on my plate was about done, the queen spoke. “Chloe, how has your mother been? I am guessing she found a pack to integrate into….and a new man to marry.”

I glanced at the King and he continued eating like nothing had happened. “Yes, she is married to the current Betal of Everdeen…his daughter needed a mother.”

“And you needed a father?” she asked.

“I did not need a father,” I said calmly and reached for seconds. Since she did not seem to be letting me go anytime soon, I would rather be eating as we speak.

“Did not need one?” She let out a low chuckle. “But you certainly enjoy the benefits of having a Beta for a step- father. Your mate is the future Alpha of your pack.”

I could now obviously hear the snark beneath her voice.

An urge rose inside me to be disrespectful but I suppressed it. I did not want to give her a reason to punish me or paint a target on my back more than the reason of my birth.

It was not as though I blamed her. In fact, I understood her more than most women would.

After all, I had a husband once who did not think faithfulness was one of the expected traits during a marriage. In her case, she was better off because she had some power to be able to look down or even punish those women.

“I did not have a choice of who my mother married and as you must know, I did not have a choice of who my father is,” I said, trying to sound apologetic.

The Queen stopped eating and looked up at me. “You did not know that your father was the King,” she said like I was taking her for a fool.

I smiled as pleasantly as I could. “Of course not, Your Majesty. Why would my mother remarry if she knew my father was the king? Don’t you think she would be better off living in the palace, albeit as a concubine?”

Not to talk of the number of years we had spent in abject poverty after my father left. Mother had married David, partly out of love and partly out of the fact that only someone like him could give her the life she wanted.

The king cleared his throat but did not look up from his meal. My hand curled around my fork and I shoved another piece of meat down my throat.

How did someone who governed the whole realm of werewolves be so irresponsible with his offspring?

Did it not occur to him that the more illegitimate children out there, the more problems there would be for his primary descendants?

Even more, he had the audacity to bring his mistress’ children into the house.

How could I acknowledge someone like him as my father?

“Now that you know, your mother and father must be delighted-‘

“I am estranged from them,” I interrupted her to say. “Legally emancipated. I am now an orphan under the Everdeen pack,” I added and took another bite of my food.

His Majesty’s fork dropped to the plate and his head snapped to me. “What did they do to you?” He turned to Axe who had been quiet but angry at my side. “What did your people do to my daughter?!”

If anyone heard him, they would think he was such an upright model of present parenting.

“Nothing anyone has to be worried about,” I said and got up from the table, suddenly lost my appetite.

“May I be allowed to go rest? The journey to this place was long. Also, Your Majesty, please pass my greetings to the princess. I wish I would be able to see her-”

“Why wouldn’t you be able to see her?” the queen said and set the fork down, leaning forward on the table. “Are you planning to leave? Did you not come here for the meet?”

Mooked at Axel. He smiled at me in reassurance and I let out a small breath through my mouth. “I am here for the meet. I only wondered if the royal family will find my presence palatable.”
