Chapter 147
Chloe’s POV
Liam’s words made everyone freeze and turn slowly towards me.
I had never prayed more for the ground to open up and swallow me than in that moment.
He started coming closer, continuing to yap about how much the king had been talking about me since I arrived, and how talented he thinks that I am.
My hands trembled at my sides but I forced a smile onto my face. So this was the plan that he had.
Even if I refused to be a princess, by doing this, he was forcing there to be a recognized relationship between me and the royal family.
“I will be right with you, Your Highness,” I hissed out, my eyes hard.
Axel was hesitant to let me go but he had to. I walked behind Liam with my head down out of the dining hall.
I thought we would have stopped a few corridors away from the dining hall, since I doubted that the King was actually calling me. But Liam kept walking, taking me towards the palace.
At the gates, I stopped walking, my jaw so tight that my teeth ground together. “What do you and your people want?”
Liam had the audacity to smirk as he looked over his shoulder at me. “My people? Chloe, darling, you mean our people, right?”
“I do not…” I trailed off when I realized that Liam was just baiting me. I kept my mouth shut and followed after him, my head down until we got to two tall gold-plated doors.
The guards on either side were among the two most intimidating wolves I had ever seen in my life.
Liam stepped back and whispered against my ear. “Don’t fret when you go inside. They are nicer than they sound.”
Before I could ask him to confirm what he meant, he opened the doors and shoved me into the room.
My entire body went rigid as at least a dozen pairs of eyes turned to me. The king himself sat on his throne at the opposite end of the hall with the queen and princess on one side of him.
Liam walked past him and took his throne on his father’s other side.
When the king saw me, his lips stretched in a bright smile. “Chloe, you…”
I fell to one knee and bowed my head. “It is my honor to be in your presence, Your Majesty.”
Everyone in the throne room froze, the officials whispering amongst each other.
“What sort of a greeting is that? Only the warriors of the kingdom greet in that manner.”
“Is she not supposed to be a princess? The least she could have done is learn the etiquette expected of her!”

“…perhaps, is this supposed to be a slap in His Majesty’s face? After all, she has not been acknowledged as his child until now.”
The king did not respond to any of their words. He simply stood from his throne and came to stand in front of
“Look up, child,” he said, his voice soft but I could sense the warning beneath it.
I swallowed and looked up slowly as though I was being forced. “Yes, Your Majesty?”
“I am your father,” the king said. “You will address me as such.”
My lips pressed together as I tried to think of a way out of this. I did not want a father. Even less, I did not want the king as my father.
The last thing I wanted was anyone to control my life, just when I finally had my freedom after a lifetime of pain.
I bowed my head but refused to open my mouth to acknowledge him as my father.
The king’s anger built slowly until it was a raging inferno. “Chloe Waterson, are you disobeying your sovereign?!” he bellowed.
Liam tried to step in but was quickly stopped by the queen raising her hand. “This is not your place to interfere,” she hissed,
I did not need to look up to know that she had a satisfied smile on her face.
“Chloe Waterson, I am your father and you will address me as such-”
“My father died when I was a child!” I yelled over him. All the air got sucked out of the room.
A tear slid down my face and fell to the ground. This was it. I was really going to die for insulting him.
But since my fate was sealed anyway, there was no need to hold back.
“I grew up in a single bedroom so small that it could have been a cardboard box,” I said, my voice hoarse.
“Mum and I could only afford electricity six months of the year during winter. I ate leftovers from the school cafeteria and spoiled vegetables from the restaurant nearby. All of our money went to rent and my school supplies.”
I continued on for another five minutes.
Every insult because I wore tattered clothes and dirty shoes to school. All the nights that Mum and I would nearly freeze to death if not for her wolf’s body heat.
Every time we had both been harassed because of money and unpaid bills.
