Chapter 163
Chloe’s POV
The Alpha Meet dragged on for long enough and soon, the Alpha King decided that we could not be kept in the royal pack for much longer.
He called us in for one final breakfast, after which, we would be heading back to our packs.
When he entered with the royal family behind him, his eyes scanned the half and found mine. My hand grabbed Axel’s under the table.
I could tell the question that the king was asking with his eyes.
Are you really not going to let yourself be acknowledged as a princess?
I bowed my head in response. I was perfectly content where I was now, though I was certain that they would not drop the matter simply because I asked.
Sooner or later-and I feared it might be sooner-the royal family would find its way back into my life and this matter of my recognition would come up again.
But for now…
The breakfast was as peaceful as a regular meal. Because the royal family ate in silence, at some point, everyone stopped looking in their direction and simply focused on their meal.
As the meal was finishing up, Liam stood up and drew everyone’s attention by tapping the table with his finger.
All eyes turned to him but he was looking at me.
My face scrunched as I wondered what he wanted to do. Seeing my discomfort, his lips twitched as he tried to fight his smile..
“This Alpha gathering was quite eventful and yet, not at the same time,” he started, his voice calm and steady. His tone captured everyone’s attention.
“Because of the attack, there were many activities that were designed for the latter half of the meet that could not take place. It would be rather insensitive to go on tours or runs when our brothers were in the hospital or recovering.”
Liam looked at our table again. “I say our brothers because none of the Lunas recorded a single injury. It is not a stretch to say that if not for them, many lives would have been lost. But out of the lot, I must recognize a few.”
Goddess. Was this not what I expressly told him not to do?
Liam could be so stubborn!
“Seraphina Regali of the Regali pack. Sandra Moonflame of the Moonflame pack. Riven Moonflame of the Moonflame pack…and Chloe Waterson of the Everdeen pack. Though Chloe is the youngest amongst the Lunas gathered, she was the largest contributor to this battle.”

Everyone’s gazes felt like tiny knives prickling my skin.
I stared into space in front of me, reminding myself to breathe with every second that passed.
“There is no reward that can be offered in equivalence to the lives of the Alpha heirs but the royal family has prepared a small token for yourselves and your packs. It will be sent over before you arrive at your homes.”
He had really thought about everything.
If he sent the reward before I got home, then I would not be able to turn it down. Alpha Paul and Luna Diane would receive it and keep it for me.
I closed my eyes and let out a deep breath. Why was I even worried?
The more money I had, the better. There was no need to turn down money.
As if the heavy topic was done, Liam clapped, instantly brightening the mood in the room. “Now, onto the next important matter.”
The doors leading to the kitchen opened and the staff wheeled in a giant birthday cake. It was so large that six people had to guide it so it would not topple over.
For some reason, I counted the number of layers. Eighteen.
That could hardly be a coincidence.
It took me a moment to remember the date. Today was the day I thought I was supposed to turn eighteen.
“It also came to my attention that today was the birthday of one of our beloved heroes,” he said, his eyes shining with mischief. “Her eighteenth birthday and we decided to celebrate with a little cake.”
The staff set the cake down in the center of the dining room. It was so tall, much taller than even me and Liam had the audacity to call it a little cake.
He started walking towards me. Axel stood with me in his arms, whispering for me to calm down.
Liam took my hand, his voice softening.
“Though today might not feel very significant to you since you have shifted and you have a mate but today is the day that you become a fully fledged wolf,” he said.
Axel led me to the cake alongside Liam. Everyone got to their feet, singing the happy birthday song.
It was something so small but the back of my eyes burned with tears.
In that moment, my mind flashed back to all of my birthdays, the twenty plus birthdays I could remember None had ever celebrated me like this before.
After the song and a few more pleasantries, the staff cut up the cake and started to share it through the
room.
The entire time, Axel held me, taking the lead in accepting the well-wishes from the Alpha and Luna heirs that kept coming around our table.
I simply smiled, not able to speak past the lump of tears in my throat.
