Chapter 54
Chloe’s POV
Darius did not move an inch and continued leaning over me as Axel walked into the room.
My hands covered my face. I could not bring myself to watch what was going to happen next.
“Darius, I told you to step away from my mate,” Axel repeated, his voice even more tense like he was barely keeping his anger at bay.
Darius’ smile transformed into a mocking smirk. “Last I remembered, she was not your mate yet. A fiancee with no ring on her finger.”
Darius looked back at me. “Clearly, he does not take you very seriously, Chloe.”
Right. I never did get a replacement for the mating gift that Hannah broke and I did not bother to ask. At the time, it felt like the only thing that mattered was moving into the Alpha’s house and starting up my escape plan.
Darius’ words stopped Axel in his tracks. I could feel his gaze on my skin but I did not dare meet his eyes.
“Step away from her,” Axel said for the third time, his voice having lost the bite it had earlier.
“Fine,” Darius said and grabbed my hands and pulled them away from my face. He lowered and pecked my forehead before leaving the room.
Even Axel standing just a few feet away could not keep my cheeks from flaming. What did a man like Darius want with me?
“What is going on between the two of you?” Axel spat.
Of course, this one had to come and ruin my mood.
I turned my back to him, focusing on drying my hair. “The same thing that is going on between Celestia and you,” I retorted. “Like you said, Darius and I are nothing like what you are thinking.”
My comeback left Axel stunned for a moment and then, he recovered, crossing to me and sitting down on the bed beside me, “I am sorry.”
I was pretty sure he had apologized back in the car as well. Words that did not mean a thing to me.
“So you have said,” I muttered.
“I have not been forgiven,” he said matter-of-factly.
I did not agree or refute his statement. “Did you commit some crime that you think you should be
forgiven for? Or is this you admitting that there is something going on between you and Celestia after
all?”
“There is nothing going on between us.”

“So you have said,” I repeated, my voice level.
It might be a different man but the excuses did not change.
Nothing is happening between us.
You are overthinking this.
As least, in Jax’s case, he used gifts and love bombing to make it up later. If Axel were a little more like him in that regard, I might be more inclined to turn a blind eye.
What was the point of a man when you had money?
Axel’s hands grabbed the towel that was going through my hair and he came to sit in front of me, blocking my view of the mirror so I had no choice but to look at him.
