Chapter 6
Chloe’s POV
“Axel asked me to deliver a mating gift for you.”
I stared down at the box in Tony’s hands, wondering if this was some kind of joke. “Excuse me?”
“A gift,” Tony repeated. “To commemorate your mating.”
My heart skipped a beat. A gift?
Not a contract or a warning but an actual gift?
Mum gasped. For a moment, hope flashed across Mum’s face and then was quickly replaced with skepticism.
Her hands reached for me to pull me behind her back, her gaze flitting fearfully to David.
Hannah’s smile was frozen.
Disbelief spread across her face, erasing the smug look she had in her eyes only seconds earlier. Then, her anger broke through.
“Mating?!” Hannah whirled around to face me. Her hands curled into tight fists. “You and Axel are mates?! You whore, I knew you threw yourself at him!”
I ignored her, numerous questions running through my mind.
What was this supposed to mean?
Did Axel want something more than an arrangement?
The thought made my body twitch, my arms wrapping around my body protectively.
No way. I could not let myself hope for care from a man, much less another Alpha who mated me because of necessity.
Tony stepped closer. “Axel spent some time last night looking for this. He hopes you like it.”
Axel had not delivered a gift to Hannah in my past life.
This had not happened in my past life. The future was already changing.
“The box is so small,” one of Hannah’s friends mused out loud, just as I reached for the box.
My hand froze in the air as a giggle started from her, spreading through the friend group.
“It must be something random that he sent her to save face.”
“Yeah, she rejected him to his face. How could he give her anything valuable?”
Oh. They were not wrong.
Axel had every reason to keep his distance after everything that had happened.
Maybe the gift was nothing more than courtesy.
But my haywire thoughts did not stop my heart from warming. Whether it was courtesy or not, he still remembered me.

I was already wondering how I was going to break the news to my family without them looking at me or treating me like I was crazy.
He had taken care of that issue and made me look important at the same time.
David’s hand tightened around my arm as he pulled me to his side. His face was composed but the frantic look in his eyes betrayed him.
“What is going on, Chloe?” he hissed.
David wasn’t stupid.
The look in his eyes told me he had already figured it out but could not accept that he had lost control over the situation.
I kept my head high. “Axel and I had a conversation yesterday. We decided that my decision might have been a little too hasty and that we were a good match.”
My step-father did not find my answer very pleasing. I bit my tongue, muffling my cry of pain as his grip tightened around my arm.
“Chloe, I am asking you a fucking question.”
His voice was so dark that my body reacted before my mind could. I flinched, closing my eyes as I waited for him
to hit me.
Tony cleared his throat. David’s head snapped to him and then, his gaze fell to the gift.
“I am speaking to my daughter,” David said calmly.
