Chloe’s POV

Starting with Tony, everyone bowed as Axel entered the room.

He was just the heir and not the main Alpha yet the fury radiating off of him was enough to lock my family members into place, their eyes wide with fright.

Axel walked past me to Hannah and leaned down slowly in front of her. Her entire body trembled.

“Can you repeat what you just said?” he said slowly, every word sharp.

She let out a small squeak. As she tried to speak, her throat seized.

Even if Jax favoured her and gave her his mother’s jewelry, Axel was still the heir. Saying that the Alpha and Luna favour her and indirectly, Jax was disputing Axel’s legitimacy to the Alpha position.

Hannah might think that her mate should be Alpha because of what happened in our past lives. But even if she borrowed guts, she could not admit that to Axel’s face.

Axel interrupted her stuttering. “My Beta gave you an instruction.”

Hannah dropped to her knees and picked up the gift, holding it up for Axel. “H-Here-”

Before she was done speaking, Axel snatched it from her, knocking her to the ground in the process. He walked to me and lifted my head.

“You do not have to bow to me. You are my Luna,” he said.

I could not help the blush that climbed to my cheeks. When was the last time I had been so thoroughly defended?

Even in my past life, as much as Jax showered me with gifts, all of it was in private. Any time I got into altercations with any Alphas or Lunas, he was never present, only showing up after everything was over to apologize and sweettalk me.

The crinkle of wrapping paper snapped me out of my thoughts.

Axel unwrapped the gift with a gentleness that was unlike his character. “I should have come to give you myself but I was held up in a meeting.”

It revealed a red velvet box that had a jagged line running across it diagonally. When Axel saw the crack, his other hand curled into a tight fist.

David instantly launched into frantic explanation. “Young Alpha, it was my daughter’s mistake. She has always been clumsy since she was a child.”

Hannah still knelt on the ground, her fear having frozen her in place.

Axel looked slowly at Hannah and then, at David. “It seems your family despises the Everdeens. That is why my gift was tossed to the ground like trash.”

Fancy talk for ‘Are you planning to commit treason?’

His words jolt Hannah into action. Her hand flies to Lara.

“It’s her. S-She…She was the first one to mock your gift! She said it was small and worthless, right?”

Hannah turned to her friends for support and they nodded.

Hannah let out one of her loud wails. As she was already on the floor, it really sold the pitiful girl act. “I only wanted to see. I don’t know when it slipped through my fingers.”

I let out a scoff, my hand raised to Hannah. “The gift was for nie. I had not even seen what it-”

“Chloe, it’s just a ring!”

Hearing that voice, my head snapped to the door. This would be the first time since I was reborn that I would have seen Jax up close.

He moved past me without much of a glance and dropped to the ground to help Hannah to her feet.
