Walking through the corridor, the doors to the main hall stood wide open.
Just as Seraphina was about to step inside, an unfamiliar woman's voice drifted out.
"Grandma Eleanor, try these macarons I brought from France. They're sweet but not heavy, perfect with black tea."
The voice was soft and carried a deliberately delicate, sugary tone.
Seraphina's steps faltered slightly.
Lucian heard it too, a slight frown creasing his forehead.
The two of them walked into the main hall one after the other.
Upon entering, Seraphina's gaze locked onto the scene.
Eleanor Langford was seated in the place of honor, with a young woman standing right beside her.
She looked about twenty-five or twenty-six, dressed in a white Chanel suit from the latest season. Her long hair cascaded down her back, her makeup flawless, and her features strikingly beautiful.
She was the kind of stunning beauty that immediately caught your eye.
At that moment, she was holding out an exquisite porcelain plate, bending slightly as she offered it to Eleanor with a bright smile.
Eleanor's reaction, however, was rather aloof.
"Leave it there. I'm not hungry yet." Eleanor waved her hand dismissively, but as she looked up, her eyes instantly lit up.
"Sera is here!"
The pure joy in her voice was a stark contrast to the polite distance she had just shown the other woman.
The young woman's smile stiffened, but she quickly masked it, turning around to fix her gaze on Seraphina.
Those beautiful almond-shaped eyes were filled with intense scrutiny.
"Lucian." She smiled at him first, her voice so sickeningly sweet it dripped with sugar. "Long time no see."
Then she turned to look at Seraphina, tilting her head slightly. "And this must be the new bride? She really is beautiful. No wonder you were in such a rush to marry her."
Hearing this, Seraphina felt that something was a bit off.
Especially that label she used—it carried a faint, sour undertone of jealousy.
Perhaps she was just overthinking it.
