Seraphina smiled and agreed.
Little Bean wiggled in her belly, his sweet voice chiming in, "Mommy is so amazing! The old gentleman likes Mommy so much!"
Seraphina chuckled internally. "You little flatterer."
"I'm not flattering you! Mommy is just amazing!" Little Bean declared self-righteously.
Standing on the edge of the crowd, Lucian watched Seraphina surrounded by Elder Harrison and the other seniors, speaking with such effortless grace. The corners of his lips curved upward.
His wife was never some fragile flower that needed his constant protection.
She had her own brilliant light; she just usually kept it hidden.
That was exactly what he admired and loved about her.
She never boasted, yet she always managed to leave everyone in awe.
Standing in a corner with a wine glass, Melody watched the scene, feeling a suffocating weight crushing her chest.
She had meticulously prepared the genuine John Singer Sargent, hoping to be the star of the banquet, only for Seraphina to steal all the glory.
A mere root and a few casual critiques had turned Seraphina into Elder Harrison's most treasured guest.
How was that fair?
Melody downed the rest of her wine in one gulp, a chilling glint in her eyes.
Just wait and see!
...
When the banquet finally wrapped up, Elder Harrison personally walked them to the door. He held Seraphina's hand, thanking her profusely once again and reminding her to visit often.
He also had Gillian pack several boxes of Honeyed Almond Petit Fours and other pastries for Seraphina to take home.
"Elder Harrison, you don't need to see us out. It's windy outside," Seraphina said, feeling a bit overwhelmed by the hospitality.
"Nonsense, I'm perfectly healthy," Elder Harrison chuckled, then turned to Lucian. "Lucian, take good care of your wife. If anything happens to her, you'll have me to answer to."
Lucian gave a slight nod. "You have my word, Sir."
