Melody was abruptly transported back to the days when she used to dine with Lucian. Sometimes, he would absentmindedly place food on her plate, too.
But that felt like a lifetime ago.
The second Seraphina entered the picture, everything she thought she knew shattered.
"Everything alright? Not your favorite?" Landon noted her blank stare.
"No, it's fine." Melody snapped back to reality, delicately taking a bite of the meat. "It's delicious."
Landon chuckled, letting the moment go, and focused on his own meal.
The conversation ebbed and flowed effortlessly, drifting from fine dining to the contemporary art scene, and eventually settling on the latest high-society gossip. The banter wasn't exactly electric, but there were no awkward lulls either.
Landon possessed a dangerous talent.
He had an uncanny ability to unearth exactly what fascinated his companion, weaving it into the dialogue without ever seeming desperate.
Halfway through the meal, Melody set her silverware down and dabbed at her lips with a linen napkin.
"You didn't track me down today just to share a meal, did you?"
Landon mirrored her actions, leaning back as his gaze locked onto hers.
"Do you want the polite lie or the ugly truth?"
"The truth, obviously."
"Alright." Landon gave a definitive nod, leaning slightly over the table. "I'll cut right to the chase."
His voice dropped an octave, turning conspiratorial.
"I know all about your history with Lucian. I also know that it's eating you alive. I brought you here today because I want to offer you a partnership."
"What kind of partnership?"
"You help me secure total executive control of The Langford Group, and I help rip Lucian away from Seraphina."
The proposition was terrifyingly blunt, stripped of all pretense.
Melody's eyes instantly narrowed into dangerous slits.
"Excuse me?"
"Did I stutter?" Landon's expression remained dangerously serene. "You want Lucian. I want the empire. We team up, and we both walk away with exactly what we want."
The air in the private suite thickened, practically suffocating.
Melody stared him down for ten agonizing seconds before a sharp, mocking laugh tore from her throat.
