Seraphina lowered her gaze, her voice muffled. "Thank you."
Lucian didn't reply, but his grip grew infinitely more tender.
After applying the ice for a while, he set the pack aside, twisted the cap off a tube of ointment, and squeezed a small amount onto his fingertip.
"This might be a little cold."
Seraphina nodded, too afraid to meet his intense stare.
The moment the ointment touched her skin, the icy sensation made her flinch, but the warm, steady heat radiating from his palm immediately soothed the ache.
His touch was incredibly soft, tracing the contour of her cheek with absolute care.
"From now on, have the lawyers deal with the Simmons family." Lucian finished applying the medicine, his tone matter-of-fact. "You are my wife. You don't need to subject yourself to this kind of garbage."
Seraphina looked up at him.
He was looking down, wiping the excess ointment off his hands. The sharp angles of his profile were forged from steel, giving absolutely nothing away.
"I—"
"And another thing," Lucian interrupted, shifting his gaze to meet hers. His eyes were intensely dark. "If anyone ever lays a hand on you again, I am the first person you call."
Seraphina was stunned into silence.
"My wife doesn't take hits and suffer through them alone."
He set the tube down on the side table. "What do you want to eat? I'll have the chef make it."
Seraphina parted her lips, entirely at a loss for words.
But a warm, unfamiliar flutter bloomed deep in her chest.
Little Bean was doing cartwheels in her womb. "Ahhhh! Mommy, did you hear that?! Daddy is so hot! He called you his wife! He said he won't let anyone bully you! Oh my gosh, I'm literally crying!"
Seraphina mentally facepalmed. "...Can you keep it down for two seconds?"
"No!" Little Bean shouted unapologetically. "Mommy, your ears are red again! See, I told you Daddy cares about you!"
Seraphina instantly reached up to touch her ear. It was burning hot.
She took a deep breath, looked back at Lucian, and spoke with absolute sincerity. "Thank you for today. But I'm not backing down on the shares, which means there's probably going to be more trouble."
"What kind of trouble?"
