Seraphina knew he was asking about her work in the division.

"Are you sure?" Lucian moved behind her, gently massaging her shoulders. "Can you really finish years of archives in a single day? Do you want me to send someone down to help you?"

She waved him off. "No way. They're just waiting for me to make a fool of myself. If I bring in help, it means I've surrendered."

Lucian frowned, his hands pausing. "But it's going to be exhausting for you."

"Prejudice is like a mountain. They only see my bachelor's degree; they don't know what I'm actually capable of. It's normal for them to doubt me."

"Once I prove myself, they'll change their tune."

She stopped and glanced over her shoulder. "Don't stop. Keep going."

"Oh, I won't stop."

His response carried a heavy, lingering undertone as his hands resumed their rhythmic motion.

Seraphina felt there was something slightly off about his tone, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it.

That was until his fingers slowly traced down the curve of her neck and slipped just beneath her collar.

Snapping to her senses, she slapped his hand away. "Lucian, what do you think you're doing?!"

Caught red-handed, he gave her a look of pure innocence. "I didn't even touch anything yet. That doesn't count."

Blushing furiously, she batted his hand away and shot to her feet.

"I can't believe you!"

Before he could react, she turned and bolted for the door.

Lucian tried to go after her, but a sharp twinge of pain shot through his leg.

Damn it. Ever since the injury, he hadn't been able to be properly intimate with her, let alone carry her around.

He was just getting carried away in the moment, and now...
