"I was devastated because I thought I’d never get to eat them again."
"I never expected him to buy the entire factory just to keep one production line running, strictly to make these candies for me."
A bitter pang of jealousy twisted in Melody’s chest.
Lucian was a man who valued loyalty. When he cared about someone, he moved mountains for them.
Just like he did for Evie and Seraphina.
It was a shame he had never looked at her twice. How could she not be jealous?
"Melody?" Evie held out a candy, but Melody didn't take it.
She called her name again, snapping her back to reality. "Yes, Evie? What is it?"
Melody forced a smile.
Evie offered the sweet again. "Here, have one."
Melody stared at it. It was just a cheap piece of hard candy, yet Evie treated it like a priceless treasure, only parting with a single piece despite having a handful.
Anyone else would think it was made of gold.
Still, she feigned delight and took it. "Thank you, Evie."
She popped it into her mouth right in front of her. Finally, Evie’s expression softened.
"Evie, what’s been going on with you lately? You don't reply to my texts, and you won't tell me what's wrong."
Melody paused, studying her face. "I was terrified something terrible had happened to you."
Evie’s expression shifted, but she remained silent.
"If you're in trouble, or if something feels off, you have to tell me. I care about you, you know that, right?"
Melody poured on the concern, layering sweet words until Evie finally cracked.
