Melody reached out and straightened Evie's collar.
Evie glanced down at her rumpled pajamas, her cheeks flushing. "If I go down like this, will I look pathetic?"
Melody smiled, her tone soothing. "You're a Langford. You look flawless no matter what you wear. But there are a lot of people downstairs, including Lucian. You need to show him that you haven't let an outsider turn you into a mess."
Evie's expression instantly tightened.
She bit her lip. "You're right. I can't give Seraphina the satisfaction of laughing at me."
Melody lowered her eyes, smoothing out Evie's cuffs. "It's not about competing with anyone. It's about putting Lucian’s mind at ease."
It was exactly what Evie needed to hear.
She nodded and followed Melody out of the room.
As they reached the top of the stairs, Melody's phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen and, while Evie was focused on her steps, quickly fired off a text.
Downstairs in the living room, Landon was lounging on the sofa, mindlessly scrolling on his phone.
Suddenly, his device buzzed.
He glanced at the screen, a smug smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.
Charlene noticed and leaned in to snoop, but Landon swiftly flipped the phone face down on his lap, acting as if nothing had happened.
Melody guided Evie down the stairs.
Eleanor looked up. "Evie, it's good you're down. If you're not feeling well, just call the doctor. Don't suffer in silence."
Evie, who was already feeling fragile, felt her eyes well up again at her grandmother's words.
"I'm fine, Grandma Eleanor," she murmured.
Seraphina walked over with a plate of matcha pastries, her gaze lingering on Evie's face. "You look a bit pale. Do you want me to grab you some hot tea?"
Evie, thoroughly riled up by Melody's manipulation upstairs, instantly bristled.
She turned her head away. "Mind your own business."
Lucian glanced at her, his wheelchair stopping a few feet away. "Evie."
Evie clenched her cuffs, her lips trembling, but she didn't dare talk back.
Melody smoothly stepped in to defuse the tension. "Evie just woke up, she's probably still a bit disoriented. Don't take it personally, Seraphina."
