Chapter 81
Addison
“Twenty,” Jeffrey said, glancing at Nora before looking away. “While most of them are from different packs, you almost wiped out an entire pack, leaving only one survivor and he’s vowed to make you pay. I hope you understand that this isn’t just going to be a war against Addison.”
Jeffrey continued to speak, but I barely heard a word. The guilt crushed me so hard that I didn’t even want to show my face in front of everyone there. Lyra had told me what had happened, but I didn’t know there would be that many.
My mother tried to comfort me, but I moved away and rushed to my room. I wasn’t even able to get to my bed as my knees gave up on me, so I just dropped to the floor, hating the power that I had within me. How could I do that to twenty of our kind? I was so ashamed and blamed myself. I wasn’t any better than Warrick and the more I felt that guilt, the more I felt Saga retreat. I didn’t even call out to her. That was for the best.
I only had a few seconds alone as Lyra walked right through the wall and crouched in front of me.
“What do you want?” I said to her, my breath shaky. “Are you here to rub it in my face that I’m the monster? How can I not be after what I’ve done? I wish I could go back, but I can’t.”
She sighed. “Look, I shouldn’t have snapped at you like that.” She placed her hand on my shoulder. “I’m sorry that I didn’t tell everyone that you tried to stop right before launching the attack. It’s because I was just so mad. We were doing so well and then everything just went wrong. The damage has been done. The only one who could’ve helped stop you in time was Max and-”
“Don’t mention his fucking name! He smiled in that dungeon. It was the most unsettling thing I’ve ever seen. He knew that my aunt was going to die and he just let it happen.”
“Jeffrey needs to tell you something.”
“I heard him. What could he possibly have to say this time to make me feel worse??
She shrugged. “He said he would only mention it once you were back in the living room, so let’s go.”
She held out her hand for me and I hesitated for a few seconds, but eventually gave in and placed my hand on top of hers to get back to the living room.
When I returned, I found my family seated on one side with my aunt on the floor and closer to them.
Jeffrey was on the other side of the room. He’d lasted a while without my father clawing his face again.
“Well, she’s here. What did you have to say?” Lyra said to Jeffrey as she sat with me.
“I know you’re mad at Max, but there’s something you need to know.”
It made my blood boil hearing his name just a few minutes after Lyra had said it.
“What? Is he dead?” Cole forced a chuckle.
The possibility of Jeffrey telling me that made my chest tighten as I hoped that wasn’t the case. It bothered me that I didn’t want to hear such a thing. After all Max had done, how could I not wish death upon him?
“He’s innocent in all this,” Jeffrey said.
While I was relieved that he was still alive, that only seemed to piss me off. “Is this you covering for him? He watched my
aunt die.”
Chapter S1
“You’re wrong. He wanted to save her but couldn’t.”
“That’s not what I saw. He was smiling like he was proud to be there. Even his father made sure to mention it.”
His father and Davina made him drink something before to make him do exactly as he was told, which was to get your hair and deliver it to him. I was in that dungeon, too. Max just wanted to help Nora, but Davina was so powerful that she cast another spell after linking you and your aunt. She made you see things that weren’t real. He didn’t smile at all. His only mistake was that he was so worried about Nora being in the dungeon that he went down there. That was the trap set for him. The plan was just for you to hate him after what happened, but here I am, telling you the truth.”
His words should’ve completely made me feel at ease, but the souls of those who had died weighed so heavily on my shoulder.
I didn’t even know what to say about it, but I didn’t have to because soon after that, my father got up from his seat.
“You’ve done your part. Now get out before I kill you.”
“What are you waiting for?” Jeffrey dared him as he got up too. “This should be easy. No one knows that I’m here.”
“If you don’t kill him, we will,” Cole said. “Right, mom?”
My mother had been awfully silent as she studied Jeffrey. “Get out.”
“What? You’re letting him go?”
“Quet, Cole,” she snapped at him. “I would’ve loved to rip you to shreds myself, but you brought Nora back to us, even if she’s nothing but a corpse.”
Jeffrey nodded likę he was grateful. “I’m sorry I couldn’t stop this. I didn’t stand a chance at all. I swear on Nora’s lost life, who meant so much to me that I had nothing to do with this. I’ll go, but for now, I wish to be present when she’s laid to rest.”
My father snarled, grabbing him by the collar. “You don’t deserve that much. Showing you merey is enough.”
He was about to throw him out when he spoke in a louder tone filled with desperation. “This is the last time I get to see her! There are so many things I never got to tell her. I could’ve easily burned her body if I wanted to, but I thought you deserved the honor of doing that. I promise to leave afterwards.”
“Do you think we’re going to let you stay that long and not kill you?” Dylan cracked his knuckles along with Cole.
Coming closer and staring down at my aunt, Jeffrey said, “I still want to say goodbye to Nora. That’s the risk I’m willing to take.”
