Stephanie frowned. The way Steven was acting, it was as if she shouldn't be here. She hadn’t missed his glance back toward the office.
Stephanie held up the bag of snacks. “I was worried your boss might be hungry.”
With that, she started walking toward the office.
Steven blocked her way slightly. “Ma’am, the boss is with a guest right now.”
Stephanie stopped and looked up at him. She already had a guess as to who it was, so she didn't try to force her way in, wanting to avoid making things awkward for everyone.
“What kind of guest needs to be seen this late at night?”
Steven pursed his lips. Even as a top executive assistant, he wasn't quite sure how to handle this tricky situation.
Evelyn's status was a bit unique. Jonathan had gone in a few minutes ago, but Evelyn hadn't come out.
He wasn't sure what was happening inside.
Stopping Stephanie first was the safest bet.
To Stephanie, the troubled look on Steven’s face took on a different meaning.
It wasn't that she wanted to be jealous, but the situation left her no choice but to think the worst.
Her husband had been coming home late for days. A woman had answered his phone in the middle of the night, and now, she could faintly hear a woman's voice coming from inside the office.
Stephanie took a couple of steps back.
She had come tonight to ask Jonathan if he wanted to try getting to know her, for real, because she thought she was starting to fall for him.
But after all this, those thoughts had suddenly vanished.
She had started to care for Jonathan, but it wasn't as if she couldn't live without him.
Holding the snacks, Steven slowly realized that Stephanie might have misunderstood something.
Not daring to delay, Steven immediately knocked on Jonathan’s office door.
The door happened to open just then. They had just finished their conversation. Evelyn's eyes looked a little red, while Jonathan maintained his usual detached expression.
“What is it?”
Steven explained everything. “Ma’am was here just now. She brought you some snacks.”
A flicker of delight flashed in Jonathan’s eyes, and he immediately looked around. “Where is she?”
Steven replied, “She left.”
“Gone?” Jonathan’s brow furrowed. “Why did she leave without saying a word?”
