Magnus immediately woke up from his drowsiness and sneezed. "Why did I even come outside? It's freezing!"
Noelle looked at him and chuckled. "Thanks, by the way."
"No need to thank me. I practically dragged you out of a fire this time, so you owe me a big favor."
"What do you want in return?"
Magnus yawned and mumbled, "Just tell Ced to give me some time off. I'm exhausted because he's working me to death."
Noelle burst out laughing. "If you want time off, just ask him yourself."
"If asking worked, I wouldn't have had to work my ass out. Ced doesn't think of me as a human. To him, I'm probably some machine that works non-stop." His tone carried exaggerated grievance.
"I can try talking to him for you, but no promises."
"You're the best, Noelle!"
Standing in the cold wind, Noelle pulled her coat tighter and said, "Let's get back in. It's freezing out here."
"Yeah, let's go." Magnus agreed, hugging his arms to his chest as his teeth chattered.
…
That afternoon, Noelle received a call from Carl, who said, "I'll be at the hospital this afternoon."
"Got it. I'll be there with Mrs. Greene."
"Good. Come home tonight. Since everyone's back, we'll visit Mom and Dad's graves."
Noelle's grip tightened around the phone as she said, "Alright. Got it."
Noelle avoided eye contact and said, "Come on. Mrs. Greene's already here."
At the mention of the Greene family, Carl's smile faded a little. "Let's go," he said blandly.
Noelle led him down the elevator, and as the doors opened, she saw Cedric standing outside the ward. Their eyes met, and Cedric walked over, instinctively reaching out to gently ruffle her hair.
Carl immediately frowned and pushed his hand away. "Please show some respect."
Cedric pressed his lips and announced, "Noelle is my fiancée."
"That may be it, but until you're officially married, your relationship isn't exactly set in stone."
Carl's dislike for Cedric was evident. If it weren't for Noelle, he wouldn't have cared about Emma at all. And yet, Cedric was as insolent as ever.
Carl stared at Cedric and continued, "Plus, you've never received approval from the Liddells, and we've never acknowledged your relationship with Noelle."
