Chapter 165 A Careful Lie
A flash of shock crossed Hannah’s eyes.
It lasted less than a second before she forced it down.
When she looked up at Ethan again, her expression was calm and gentle.
“Isla said she got scared just now because it was dark,” Hannah explained softly.
Ethan’s suspicion did not fully fade. Isla’s behavior tonight felt off to him.

Just as he was about to ask more questions, Hannah suddenly frowned. She lifted a hand to her forehead and let out a soft groan of pain.
“What’s wrong?” Ethan’s attention shifted at once.
“I don’t know. It’s my old problem. It suddenly started hurting again.” Hannah’s face grew pale, her voice weak.
Ethan immediately became anxious. “Where’s your medicine?”
Hannah shook her head weakly. Her eyes filled with tears, making her look fragile and pitiful. “The medicine… I ran out two days ago. I planned to ask your mother to take me to the hospital today to get more, but she said she had to accompany Grandma to pray. My body couldn’t take it, so I didn’t go.”
Hearing this, Ethan’s guilt deepened.
Without hesitation, he stood up.
“Wait here. I’ll go buy it for you. What’s the name of the medicine?”
Hannah told him the name of a common painkiller and looked at him gratefully. “Ethan, thank you. If it weren’t for you, I really wouldn’t know what to do.”
“It’s fine. Rest well,” Ethan said.
He quickly left Hannah’s room.
Crossing the garden, he walked toward his car.
As he opened the door, he suddenly looked up, almost without thinking, toward the second floor of the main house.
Amelia’s room was completely dark.
Silent. Still.
An unexplained unease rose in his chest.
He thought about going back to check on her, to see if she was still angry.
But Hannah’s pale, painful face came to mind.

Ethan pressed his lips together, got into the car, and started the engine.
He had no idea that while he was rushing out to buy medicine for another woman’s headache, his wife was lying alone in a pool of blood, her life slipping away second by second.
The black car’s taillights soon disappeared into the night.
Behind the curtain of the side wing, Hannah quietly watched the lights fade.
She turned away. The gentle mask on her face cracked and fell, replaced by cold darkness.
She looked down at Isla, who was trembling slightly in her arms.
“Isla, listen to Mommy,” Hannah whispered. “Go back to your room right now and do not come out. Do you understand?”
Isla nodded without thinking.
“Good.” Hannah patted her head.
She watched her daughter run back to her room. Only then did Hannah let out a breath, though her heart raced even faster.
Amelia had been pushed down the stairs. There was a lot of blood.
Ethan was gone.
The maids had all returned to the back dorms at this hour.
Hannah did not hesitate for even a second. She left the side wing.
The night wind was cold, raising goosebumps on her skin.
Her heart pounded as she hurried across the stone path in the garden and pushed open the half closed door of the main house.
The hall lights were off. Moonlight streamed in through the large windows, spreading silver across the floor.
A heavy smell of blood hit her at once.
Hannah’s eyes found Amelia immediately.
She was curled on the cold marble floor. The white bathrobe she wore was soaked red with blood.
Her face was pale as paper. Her eyes were shut. She looked lifeless.
Hannah’s heart skipped a beat at the sight, then surged with wild joy.
