The spacious living room fell quiet, leaving only Mason and Hayden.
Hayden hopped down from the couch and ran over to Mason. The first thing he said was, “Daddy Mason, how’s Aunt Amelia? Was she badly hurt?”
“It’s not too bad.” Mason tried to keep his tone light. “But she broke her leg and needs to rest for a while.”
“She broke her leg?”
Hayden’s brow furrowed right away, and he looked even more worried.
He stayed quiet for a moment, then asked in a careful voice, “So … will she be like Dad and have to use a wheelchair forever?”
Mason shook his head and answered seriously, “No.”
Seeing that Hayden was still anxious, Mason added, “And your dad won’t be in a wheelchair forever either. He’ll be able to stand up again soon.”
Not fully understanding his words, Hayden gave a slow, uncertain nod.
“All right, it’s late. Go get some sleep. Kids shouldn’t stay up this late.” Mason patted him on the back.
Hayden obediently turned to head for his room. After a couple steps, he looked back. “Can I go visit Aunt Amelia at the hospital tomorrow?”
“Of course. As long as you wake up on your own tomorrow morning.”
“I will, I promise!” With Mason’s assurance, Hayden perked up and dashed back to his room.
Mason didn’t go to bed right away. Instead, he walked over to the kitchen and spoke to Miles when he came out. “Prepare a breakfast for a patient with a bone injury tomorrow morning— something nutritious and light.”
After giving the order, he finally turned and went to his own room.
The next morning, Hayden woke up at the crack of dawn.
He got dressed quickly and urged Mason to get ready, looking very serious.

So while most people were still asleep, Mason’s car was already pulling into the hospital’s underground parking.
Mason held Hayden’s hand as they walked into the VIP ward area.
The bodyguard at the door gave a respectful nod and opened the door for them.
Inside the room, it was very quiet. Amelia was still asleep.
She looked as though she had finally gotten some real rest. Even though her face still looked pale and sickly, there was a new sense of peace about her as she slept.
Hayden immediately lightened his steps and tiptoed to the bedside.
His eyes went straight to Amelia’s leg, which was in a cast.
“Aunt Amelia is really tough.” He lowered his voice and whispered to Mason, “It must hurt so bad, but she can still sleep.”
Mason came over, set the breakfast box on the nightstand, and motioned for Hayden to be quiet so Amelia could sleep a little longer.
But just when Mason thought she was still out, Amelia suddenly cracked one eye open, a playful smile in her gaze. “I’m awake already.”
The surprise startled Hayden, but then he couldn’t help laughing.
Amelia smiled at him, too. “How come you’re here so early?”
Hayden grew a little shy under her gaze and quietly explained, “I woke up early because I’m still jet–lagged.
“Aunt Amelia, how’s your leg? Does it still hurt?”
“It’s a lot better now. Thank you for asking, Hayden.”
Mason didn’t join their conversation. He just quietly unpacked the breakfast he’d brought.
Amelia quickly pressed the call button to summon the caretaker and said a little sheepishly, “Um… I need to go wash up first.”
Moments later, Amelia returned from the bathroom in a wheelchair with the caretaker’s help. Mason had already set up the table with a bowl of warm congee waiting for her.
The breakfast Mason brought was so much better than the bland hospital food.
She ate the congee in small sips, listening to Hayden chatter about his adventures abroad.
