He knew that no matter what the truth was, it was a fact that Amelia was injured. It was also true that he hadn’t realized it right away or taken her to the hospital immediately.
But as far as Ethan was concerned, Amelia had suffered and broken her leg, so he owed her compensation.
At the same time, Hannah and Isla had no one else to rely on, and he needed to look after them, too.
The two didn’t have to be in conflict.
He figured that as long as he treated Amelia better from now on and gave her enough comfort and compensation–whether in material things or in attitude–then once she recovered, all of this would naturally blow over.
That way, he would have protected Hannah and Isla, kept things steady with his wife, and everything would be back to normal.
Thinking this way, some of the frustration and guilt weighing on Ethan quietly faded.
He picked up his phone and dialed the extension, giving Miles instructions. “Tell the kitchen to make a pot of congee first thing tomorrow. I’m going to the hospital early.”
After hanging up, Ethan slumped against the couch and tiredly rubbed his brow.
He felt that he had finally worked out the best way to handle what happened.
But what he didn’t consider was that some things, once broken, could never be the same again.
Outside the hospital, night had already fallen.
Amelia glanced at the time.
Mason was still sitting by her bedside. He had been there for hours now.
She felt grateful, but also a little uneasy.
“Um… Mason.” Her voice was soft as she broke the silence. “It’s really late. Aren’t you going home?”
Mason heard her and looked at her face, his gaze gentle. “I’m not in a hurry.”
“But isn’t Hayden home alone? Isn’t that unsafe?” Amelia asked, a bit worried.

“Don’t worry, I asked my assistant to go keep him company,” he explained patiently. “Besides, Hayden is more mature and independent than we think.”
“When we lived abroad, my mom had to take Evan to rehab on a regular basis, and I was always busy with work. Most of the time, Hayden was home by himself. He was really young, but he was always well–behaved. He never caused any trouble.”
Listening to this, Amelia felt a subtle wave of emotion in her heart.
When Mason looked her right in the eye, she became even more self–conscious.
She couldn’t help but mumble, “Still, you shouldn’t stay here all night. There are nurses at the hospital, I’ll be fine.”
Seeing the guilt written plainly on Amelia’s face, Mason let out a quiet laugh.
He leaned in a little, his voice soothing. “How about this? I’ll leave after
you
fall asleep.”
Amelia’s heart skipped a beat when she heard that.
Mason’s fresh, cedar scent became even stronger as he got closer, filling her senses.
His deep eyes focused on her, and she could see her own flustered reflection in them.
She could feel her cheeks heat up.
Trying to hide how flustered she felt, she pulled the blanket up, lay down, and shut her eyes.
“Okay, I’m going to sleep right now. I’m already asleep!”
Her breathing turned deliberately slow and light. She looked so obviously fake asleep that it was kind of adorable.
Mason’s eyes were full of tenderness and affection as he looked at her.
He lifted his hand, instinctively wanting to touch her soft cheek.
But at the last second, his fingers stopped midair, and he slowly let his hand fall.
He was afraid of startling her.
At first, Amelia was only pretending to sleep.
She could clearly feel Mason’s gaze, surrounding her like a gentle net, making her both nervous
and safe.
Having Mason there brought her a kind of security she had never felt before.

All these years, she’d gotten used to feeling completely alone in Rowe Villa. She’d gotten used to waiting through endless nights for someone who never came home, lying awake and drifting between hope and disappointment.
But right now, there were no fights, no cold shoulders, no endless waiting in this room.
There was only a strong, dependable man here, quietly keeping her company.
The sleepiness she was faking gradually turned into real drowsiness, and before long, Amelia drifted off into a deep sleep.
When Mason noticed her breathing had grown steady and even, he knew she was truly asleep.
He sat there and watched her for a while, then carefully stood up and slipped out of the room.
Even though he was gone, he’d arranged for several bodyguards to be posted at the hospital to make sure no one would bother Amelia while he was gone.
It was close to midnight by the time Mason finally got home.
All the lights in the living room were still on. His assistant, Edward, was sitting on the couch with Hayden, telling him a story in a low voice.
When Mason walked in, Edward quickly got to his feet and apologized, “Mr. Everett, you’re back. Mr. Hayden insisted on waiting up for you before going to bed.”
On the couch, Hayden immediately looked up. He was dressed in blue pajamas, his eyes shining bright.
“You can go ahead and clock out. Get some rest,” Mason nodded at Edward, signaling that he could leave.
