He softened his attitude and pleaded, “Amelia, do you really have to make things this ugly? Isla is just a kid!”
“Oh?” Amelia let out a mocking laugh, “So what are you worried about? Even if they find out it was a little kid who pushed me, she wouldn’t be sent to jail under the law. At most, she’ll get a warning and go home with her parents for a lecture.
“But… if it turns out a parent was involved–encouraging, covering things up, or helping hide the truth–that would be a different story.”
Ethan was instantly caught off guard by her words. His heart squeezed tight.
He was about to lash out at Amelia for making accusations when Mason’s cool, steady voice rang out from the side.
“I forgot to tell you something, Ethan.
“I didn’t just call the police—I also contacted a few media outlets.”
He watched Ethan’s eyes go wide, then added, “If you don’t hurry back, this is going to hit the headlines tomorrow.”
Ethan couldn’t stay a second longer.
“Amelia, get some rest. I’ll head out now.”
Watching Ethan leave in such a sorry state, Amelia looked at Mason in surprise. “Mason, did you really call the media?”
Her voice carried clear worry. “Will they … make me look bad too?”
After all, in stories about rich family scandals, the wife always ended up being pitied and mocked.
Mason saw the worry on her face, but then his lips suddenly curled up with a rare, teasing smile.

Amelia was completely at a loss for words for a second.
She had never expected the always–calm, upright Mason could have such a dark side.

Right then, Hayden stroked his chin thoughtfully and asked in all seriousness, “Daddy Mason, are you and Ethan what people call love rivals?”
His words came out of nowhere and instantly made the room feel awkward.
Amelia’s face turned bright red, as if he’d just hit a nerve. She stammered, “Hayden, don’t say weird things!”
She snuck a glance at Mason, scared he might get the wrong idea or feel uncomfortable.
But to her surprise, Mason didn’t deny it at all. He just nodded calmly, “Yes, you could say that.”
Amelia almost forgot how to breathe.
Her heart nearly stopped for a second.
She couldn’t understand why Mason said that.
Was he just going along with Hayden’s innocent question, or was there more to it?
Her mind blanked out. She didn’t dare meet Mason’s eyes, feeling her cheeks burning up.
The air felt thick with unspoken tension, and the sunlight that filtered in through the curtains made her cheeks burn up even more.
But she didn’t dare ask anything.
She was afraid that if she broke the tension, the answer might be even more embarrassing.
Luckily, Mason didn’t push the topic.
He just gave her a deep look. His eyes were calm, but there seemed to be a surge of unreadable emotions hidden behind them.
Time ticked by slowly, and for a moment, no one said anything.
Soon, Mason’s phone rang.
He picked up, listened to a brief report, and replied in a few short words.

After hanging up, he told Amelia, “Something’s come up at work. I need to go take care of it.”
