Trying to sound casual, she asked, “Hayden, has Daddy Mason … always been this much of a loner, even when he was abroad?

“Look at him. He’s almost thirty and doesn’t even go on dates. Doesn’t your grandma ever push him to get married?”

Hayden cocked his head, his big, dark eyes gleaming with a sharp, knowing light.

He thought for a bit, then cut straight through Amelia’s weak disguise. “Aunt Amelia, are you actually asking if Daddy Mason has had a girlfriend all these years?”

Amelia was instantly at a loss for words.

She let out a couple of awkward laughs and silently thanked her luck that Mason was not there. Otherwise, she would literally die of embarrassment.

Under Hayden’s clear gaze, there was just no way to hide.

She nodded, almost imperceptibly.

Once he got her silent confirmation, Hayden answered seriously, “Grandma has tried to set him up a few times, but Daddy Mason told her not to meddle. He said he knows what he’s doing.”

Hearing that, a quiet sense of joy rose inside Amelia–so subtle that even she barely noticed it.

So he is still single then?

But that feeling lasted barely three seconds before Hayden’s next words shattered it completely.

“But…”

He suddenly stopped, looking thoughtful.

Those two words instantly hooked all of Amelia’s attention.

She pressed him, “But what?”

Hayden thought back and spoke slowly. “Well, there’s a woman named Ms. Jewell. She comes over to our house for dinner sometimes. Grandma seems to really like her–she’s always especially happy whenever Ms. Jewell visits.”

“Ms. Jewell?” Amelia’s heart sank.

“Yeah.” Hayden nodded and added, “I heard Grandma say Ms. Jewell and Daddy Mason were college classmates. And … I even saw a photo of them together in Daddy Mason’s study!”

“A photo of them… in his study?”

In that instant, Amelia felt crushed.

No one knew better than her what kind of person Mason was.

He was extremely cold by nature, almost obsessive about cleanliness and personal boundaries.

His study was his most private place. Almost no one was allowed in, except for the cleaning staff.

Anything kept in there had to be truly precious.

And if there was a photo with a woman in there…

That woman must mean a lot to him.

Knowing his character, he would never have kept that kind of photo unless she really mattered.

This realization made Amelia feel cold all over.

She was glad she hadn’t pressed Mason earlier about that “love rival” comment.

Otherwise, she would’ve looked even more ridiculous.

Her mind suddenly flashed back to what Tim had once said, “Mason has someone in his heart. He’s been hung up on her for years.”

Maybe… it was that “Ms. Jewell.”

Hayden, sharp as ever, immediately picked up on her change in mood.

He looked at her gloomy expression and asked with confusion, “Aunt Amelia, what’s wrong? Why do you look so unhappy all of a sudden?”

He blinked those big, innocent eyes and, once again, blurted out something shocking.

“Are you jealous because you like Daddy Mason, too?”
