“Alright. As long as you’re sure about it. Just remember–if anything comes up, call me right away! Don’t try to handle it all by yourself!”
They talked a little longer before Amelia said she needed to rest and hung up.
After putting her phone down, she let out a long sigh. The familiar ache in her chest slowly crept back.
She wasn’t sure how much time passed before Hayden woke up.
“Hayden, you’re awake?” Amelia immediately tucked away her low mood and smiled gently.
She asked softly, “Are you hungry?”
Hayden nodded honestly and complained, “Yeah. Aunt Amelia, the hospital meals are terrible. The veggies taste like there’s no salt at all, and the chicken is dry like wood.”
Amelia laughed, nodding in agreement. “Yeah, they’re pretty awful. How about I order something for you? Want some cupcakes?”
Hayden nodded eagerly and answered loudly, “Yes!”
Still smiling, Amelia picked up her phone, opened the delivery app, and carefully browsed nearby bakeries.
But before she could place the order, someone gently knocked on the ward door.
“Come in,” Amelia said.
The door swung open, and Tim’s tall, relaxed figure walked inside.
In one hand, he carried a big bouquet of bright sunflowers. In the other was a neatly packed box from a famous dessert shop.
He wore a bright, cheerful smile, flashing neat white teeth.
“Amelia, I came to see you!”
Amelia stared at him, clearly surprised. “Tim? What brings you here?”
Then it hit her. She pointed at him, wearing the classic look of someone who’d just caught some good gossip. “So you’re the one Lily sent to check on me?”
Tim casually set the flowers on the bedside table and nodded with a grin. “Yes. That’s me.”

“Wow.” Amelia’s eyes lit up with interest.
She teased him, slowly dragging out her words. “So … what’s going on between you two now? Already upgraded to family? Can she boss you around anytime?”
Being teased so directly, even Tim, usually pretty thick–skinned, showed a slight, awkward blush.
He cleared his throat awkwardly, glanced away, but still tried to deny it. “Don’t talk nonsense. We’re just friends. Totally pure, totally innocent friendship.”
Amelia raised an eyebrow and didn’t push further, silently scoffing.
Just friends? The kind who sleeps in the same bed?
Still, the cake he brought couldn’t have shown up at a better time.
“What kind of visitor brings cake to a hospital?” Amelia asked, watching him set the on the table.
Tim laughed even harder. “Like I don’t know how bad hospital food is.”
As he spoke, he smoothly opened the cake box.
pretty box
Inside was a delicately made mango mousse cake, topped with shiny cubes of fresh mango.
“Hayden, come eat some cake!” Tim called toward the couch.
Hayden clearly knew him well. As soon as he saw Tim, he beamed and called sweetly, “Thanks, Mr. Clem!”
“You’re welcome.” Tim cut a nice–sized slice, placed it on a small plate, and handed it over with a fork.
Hayden took it politely with both hands, carried it back to the coffee table, and took small bites, looking completely satisfied.
Tim cut another slice and turned to Amelia. “Want some too? It’s light–not heavy at all.”
She looked at the tempting cake and swallowed, but she let reason win over cravings.
She shook her head with a bit of régret. “The doctor told me to be careful with food lately. No sweets or greasy stuff. You guys go ahead. Don’t mind me.”
Tim didn’t insist.

He cut himself a small piece and ate with Hayden.
The ward grew quiet.
