Mason’s hand twitched slightly on the steering wheel, and a faint smile tugged at his lips.

So she really did care about him.

“What did you tell her?”

Hayden answered honestly, “I said no. I told Aunt Amelia that besides the men at work, you don’t see other women. Except for Ms. Jewell–she comes by occasionally to discuss work.”

Mason’s smile faded. Between him and Phoebe, there had only ever been a professional closeness from that big project overseas.

Since returning, they hadn’t had any personal contact.

Unaware that Amelia had already misunderstood, Mason frowned slightly.

He turned to Hayden, speaking firmly, “Hayden, remember this.

If Amelia asks about this again, tell her clearly that I don’t have a girlfriend. Ms. Jewell is just a colleague and a friend. Understand?”

Hayden didn’t really understand why adults had to make things so complicated, but he still nodded hard. “Okay! I’ll remember!”

When Ethan rushed to the police station, he immediately spotted the lawyer, Oscar Zimmer, sitting on a bench in the waiting area.

“Mr. Zimmer.” Ethan hurried over. “How is it? Where are Hannah and Isla?”

Oscar stood and pointed toward the inner hallway. “They’ve been taken in to give statements. Routine questioning.”

“Questioning?” Ethan frowned. “What could they possibly know? They-”

“Mr. Rowe, calm down first.” Oscar motioned for Ethan to sit. His tone was steady. “I already spoke with Officer Lynch, who’s handling the case. Right now, Ms. Gray and her daughter are considered the primary suspects.”

“That’s impossible!” Ethan blurted. “They have no reason to do this.”

Oscar’s gaze sharpened, and he didn’t argue. Instead, he calmly laid out the facts.

“From what I know, Ms. Harlow has been living elsewhere and had almost no contact with anyone in the villa. If this were some kind of revenge by internal staff, it’s very unlikely. What motive would they have?”

Ethan wanted to speak, but no words came out.

Oscar continued, “The surveillance footage was deliberately tampered with. Any traces on the stairs or floor were carefully cleaned. That’s not something an average person could do. It takes planning and full knowledge of the place.”

Ethan’s face paled. He had thought about all of that before, but he hadn’t wanted to think too deeply.

“Maybe Amelia just slipped?”

Oscar looked at him oddly.

He said slowly, emotionless, “Mr. Rowe, based on your understanding of Ms. Harlow, do you really think she would hurt herself just to frame Ms. Gray and force her and her daughter out?”

Ethan froze.

Amelia had always been cool–tempered and obedient. She never argued with people or stirred up trouble.

Would she do something so hysterical and self–destructive?

That was impossible.

She fell from such a high flight of stairs. If she’d hit her head, she could’ve died. She wouldn’t risk her life like that.

Ethan’s face went pale, and his expression grew darker by the second.

Time dragged on slowly. Outside, the sky shifted from gray–blue to total darkness.

At last, footsteps echoed down the hallway.

Ethan snapped his head up and saw Hannah and Isla being led out by a female officer.

After hours of questioning, Hannah looked exhausted. The moment she spotted Ethan, it was like she’d found a lifeline, and tears started streaming down her face,

“Ethan, you’re finally here!” she cried as she rushed over, grabbing his arm. “You have no idea- they interrogated us like criminals! Isla is just a kid. She can’t handle this kind of scare!”

Ethan’s eyes swept past her to Isla, who stayed quiet behind her.
