On one side, there were a few years in prison, but she would walk out with five million dollars and a completely changed life. On the other hand, instant disgrace, a theft charge, and ending up with nothing.
It wasn’t a hard decision.
“Fine. I’ll do it.”
Early the next morning, while Amelia was still recovering in the hospital, the police called her.
They informed her that the case was closed–they’d found a suspect.
“The suspect is a maid from Rowe Villa. Her name is Elodie,” the officer explained. “Her fingerprints were found in the security monitoring room.
“And under her bed, we discovered a rag she used to wipe up blood that hadn’t been thrown away. Tests show the blood matches yours. The evidence is solid, and she’s already confessed.”
Hearing that, Amelia didn’t feel any relief.
Elodie?
That shy, timid girl who always seemed afraid of everyone?
A vague image of that maid flashed through Amelia’s mind.
She’d seen Isla do it. How could that be wrong?
Elodie must be the scapegoat someone pushed forward.
Mason arrived soon after hearing the news.
When he entered the ward, he saw Amelia staring blankly out the window, her face paler and more solemn than two days ago.
“What’s wrong?” he asked, walking over and immediately sensing something was off.
Amelia nodded and explained everything the police had said, along with her suspicions.
“It has to be Hannah. She probably paid the maid to take the blame.”
Mason listened quietly, his emotions flickering in his eyes.
He didn’t question her or offer empty reassurances.

Instead, he reached out and covered her cold hand. “Okay. I understand.
“I’ll get to the truth of this.
“Right now, you don’t have to worry about anything. Just focus on getting better. Your health comes first.”
In that moment, his warmth seemed to thaw some of the chill in her heart.
But the thought of Phoebe made her gently pull her hand back. She said softly, “Thanks, Mason.”
In stark contrast to Mason’s complete trust was Ethan’s visit later that afternoon.
He seemed to accept the police’s conclusion without much doubt. He looked relaxed, even bringing a big bouquet of vivid champagne roses for Amelia.
He arrived shortly after Mason left.
Ethan put the flowers in the vase by her bed and sat down in the chair beside her.
“Amelia, I heard about the police’s conclusion,” he said, looking relieved. “See? Hannah and Isla are innocent. Now that it’s all sorted, don’t let it weigh on you anymore.”
He didn’t notice the cold edge in Amelia’s eyes. He continued, “It was just a misunderstanding. Once you feel a little better, move back home.
“When the time comes, apologize to Hannah and Isla. Talk it out properly. Let’s just move on, okay?”
Apologize to the two who had almost gotten her killed?
Amelia had been grumpy all day from the lingering pain of her injuries. Hearing that nonsense made the resentment she’d been holding back explode.
“Ethan!” she snapped, her eyes blazing.
“I’d rather divorce you than say a single word of apology to them!”
The gentleness drained from Ethan’s face,
He jumped up, eyes full of disbelief and anger.
“Amelia, what nonsense are you talking about?!” he demanded sharply. “I’ve told you many times! The title of Mrs. Rowe will only ever be yours! Why won’t you listen? Why do you keep bringing up divorce just to upset me?”
