Except she didn’t mention a single word about the kiss he’d stolen while she was asleep.
“…He’s been so good to me–so good it feels … unreal.” Amelia’s voice grew quieter, threaded with confusion and bitterness. “But Lily, I can’t keep accepting it like this anymore.
“Mason finally has someone he likes. I should be happy for him. I should bless him.”
“Someone he likes?” Lily blinked, her brows shooting up. “Who? How do I not know about this?”
“Ms. Jewell,” Amelia said softly, as if something had pricked her chest with countless tiny needles, leaving a faint ache. “You know this, too–Mason and I … we’re not related by blood. When I was younger, I could act however I wanted around him. But it’s different now. We’re both grown up.
“If I keep clinging to him like before, shamelessly enjoying how good he is to me, and can’t control the boundaries between us… what happens if Ms. Jewell finds out one day and misunderstands? I don’t want my existence to create even the smallest distance between him and the person he likes.”
She looked up at Lily and forced out a smile–but it looked worse than crying.
“So, I have to stay farther away. It’s respect for him … and the only thing I can do for him.”
Lily fell silent.
She didn’t comfort her right away–she simply watched Amelia quietly, the investigative look in her eyes growing stronger.
“Amelia,” Lily spoke suddenly, her tone much more serious. “Forget Ms. Jewell for a second. Answer me one thing.”
She stepped forward, bent down, and met Amelia’s eyes at the same level, asking word by word, “Have you ever considered that the reason you’re thinking this way–the reason it hurts so much–has nothing to do with any of that ‘boundaries and respect‘ crap but because you’ve fallen for Mason?”
…
Amelia jolted as if shocked, her body shrinking back as her eyes flew wide with disbelief.
“N–no way!” she blurted without thinking. “What are you talking about? How could I like Mason? I’ve always … only seen him as a brother!”
The thought was so outrageous she didn’t even have room to think–her first instinct was to deny it with everything she had.

As if to make her denial sound more believable, she added in a flustered rush, “And you know- I liked Ethan for so long. I only just got out of that relationship.
“I’m exhausted. There’s no way I’d fall for someone else that fast.”
But the more urgently she denied it, the more it sounded like she was covering something up.
Watching her like a startled little deer, Lily understood most of the truth already.
Amelia probably hadn’t even realized it yet–but her heart had already, quietly, tilted toward someone else.
Lily knew Amelia’s temperament–soft on the outside, strong on the inside, stubborn to the bone.
If she forced it out of her now, Amelia would only retreat deeper into her shell out of fear and helplessness.
A tiny sprout had finally appeared–Lily couldn’t let Amelia crush it with her own hands.
With that in mind, Lily softened her tone and stopped pressing her.
“Alright, alright, fine–I spoke out of turn. Don’t get worked up.” She patted Amelia’s shoulder to soothe her, then smoothly pivoted. “But… back to Ms. Jewell. I still find it weird. Tim is that close to Mason—if Mason really has someone who is the love of his life, there’s no way Tim wouldn’t have mentioned even a single word to me.”
Lily’s suspicion helped Amelia’s panicked, racing heart settle a little.
“It’s true! Hayden said it himself–he said he saw a photo of Mason and that Ms. Jewell together in his study!”
The words of a three–and–a–half–year–old, and a photo of unknown authenticity…
That was all her evidence.
It sounded so thin it could shatter with a breath.
But for Amelia in this moment, it was the only pillar she had–the thing she used to draw the line and force herself to let go.
Looking at her stubbornness, Lily felt both annoyed and amused.
“Alright.” Lily stood up straight, slipping back into her capable, dependable mode as she patted her chest. “Stop sitting here alone, overthinking and spiraling. Leave this to me.”
She winked at Amelia. “When I get back, I’m interrogating Tim immediately. I’ll dig up Ms.
