Chapter 216 Trauma Revisited
Locked inside, she pounded on the door until her palms stung, crying until her voice went raw.
Over and over, she called for Mom and Dad, begging them to let her out.
Finished
But no matter how she screamed, no matter how she pleaded, the only answer was endless darkness and thunder that split her ears.
No one was coming to save her.
Downstairs, her parents were probably holding wineglasses, discussing in satisfication–how “character builds hardship” was necessary.
Later, when they discovered she wasn’t the Harlows‘ real daughter, they threw her out without mercy–out of the home she’d lived in for more than a decade.
That day was a thunderstorm, too–lightning and thunder tearing the sky apart.
The sky hung low like it was about to collapse, and heavy raindrops slammed into her–cold and painful.
She hid in a half–abandoned chapel, utterly miserable.
So, deep down, Amelia had long equated storms with everything bad that could happen.
But thankfully, in that crumbling chapel, she met Nora–arriving like a saint.
Nora brought her back to the Everetts and gave her a truly warm home.
During her years with the Everetts, Nora quickly discovered her secret.
Whenever the forecast warned of a storm, the gentle Nora would prepare in advance. She’d bring the still- teenage Evan and Mason with her, and knock on Amelia’s door.
That family warmth–like soft beams of sunlight–shone into the damp, shadowed corners of her past, slowly driving out the darkness that had clung to her for years.
For a while, Amelia naïvely believed she’d been healed.
But she never expected that the moment she was alone again in wind and rain, the fears buried deepest inside her would burst up like monstrous vines–wrapping tight around her heart until she couldn’t breathe.
at all.
Hiding under the blanket didn’t he
Amelia couldn’t keep up the façade anymore
She threw off the blanket. Ignoring the heavy cast on her left leg, she hopped on one foot–awkwardly clutching the blanket–and shoved herself, blanket and all, into the closet.
The cramped, sealed space gave her a thin, false sense of safety.
Thunder still raged through the room.

Amelia bit down hard on her lower lip.
The pain seemed to keep her somewhat awake.
She shut her eyes and prayed again and again, begging for this nightmare to end.
But the universe seemed determined to go against her.
The thunder didn’t lessen–it only grew worse.
Suddenly!
A massive bolt of lightning burned a blinding white imprint across Amelia’s tightly shut eyelids!
Then, before the bone–shaking thunder even arrived, the entire estate plunged into darkness.
The power went out.
Every light in the room died at once.
In that instant, Amelia’s heart seemed to stop beating.
And almost at the same time, the delayed thunder detonated.
The double hit of terror shattered her last line of defense.
“Ah!”
A muffled scream burst from her throat–only to be clamped down by her own hand.
Tears surged, no longer containable.
Finished
Amelia curled into the closet corner, tears sliding down in silence, her body shaking violently with fear.
She could even hear her teeth chattering–clicking together–blending with the savage rain outside. –
In that chaos, dazed, she seemed to hear many people running around outside the closet–footsteps throughout the estate.
There were also blurred shouts–like the staff checking the wiring, or calming others who’d been frightened
too.
Then, someone opened her bedroom door.
Amelia’s body went rigid instantly.
Should I go out?
No.
She rejected the idea almost immediately.
She couldn’t imagine crawling out of the closet with a face smeared in tears and snot, looking a total mess, and being seen by any of the staff in the house.
