Chapter 217 Lunged into His Embrace
But the gentle comfort she’d expected never came.
Instead, a man’s voice dropped heavily above her head.
“Amelia. It’s me.”
That voice…
Amelia’s body jolted hard.
It was Mason.
Disbelieving, she slowly lowered her arm and peeked up through her fingers.
In the dim light, his tall frame nearly blocked the closet opening entirely.
He was down on one knee outside, holding up his phone to light the space.

The harsh white beam traced the taut line of his jaw. His thin lips were pressed into a hard, cold line, his eyes dark and unreadable in the shadows as he stared at her without blinking–curled up in the corner.
It really was him.
“Mason?” Amelia’s lips trembled, and the title slipped out on instinct–soft, shaky, almost dazed.
How is he here?
Wasn’t he … supposed to have taken Hayden back?
Mason didn’t seem interested in explaining.
When he saw her tear–streaked little face, his brows drew together almost imperceptibly–and then, he switched off the phone’s flashlight.
Darkness swallowed everything again–so thick you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face.
But this darkness felt different from before.
Because there was someone else breathing now–someone solid and real. The suffocating loneliness quietly tore open, just a little.
“Come out.” His voice stayed clipped, almost emotionless. He reached in, as if to pull her out.
But being seen like this–so pathetic–sent Amelia’s shame through the roof.
She forgot for a second that she’d been terrified of thunder. Instead, she scrambled deeper into the closet, gripping the doorframe with both hands, stubbornly refusing to come out.
“I’m not coming out! I’m fine!”
Mason didn’t try to drag her out again. He withdrew his hand.

Seconds ticked by. In the cramped space, there was only Amelia’s ragged breathing–and the man’s steady, unhurried breaths.
Just when Amelia thought he’d give up and leave, Mason shifted forward and crouched directly in front of
her.
“Amelia.”
He said her name in the dark, voice low–but razor clear.
“Look at me.”
Even though she couldn’t see a thing, Amelia could feel his gaze–burning through the darkness, locking onto her.
Then, she felt him open his arms. The movement stirred a faint draft that brushed her cheek.
Half–commanding, he said to her, “Hold onto me.”
What?
Amelia’s mind went blank.
They’d never done anything this intimate.
“I … I told you I’m fine…” She tried to resist–pointlessly–but her voice had already weakened.
But the universe refused to give her any chance to keep pretending.
Another earth–shattering crack of thunder exploded without warning!
Amelia’s scream died in her throat.
Instinct completely overpowered reason.
She lunged without thinking, burying herself in the embrace that was right there. Her fists clutched the fabric at his chest, and she pressed her face hard against him, seeking shelter.
She hit him hard enough that he gave a muffled grunt and rocked back–but his arms closed around her in the same instant, holding her securely.
He wrapped her tight, one hand cradling the back of her head, the other patting her trembling back in a steady, soothing rhythm.
His embrace was like a silent mountain–solid and steady, offering an endless sense of safety.
Amelia’s near–breaking emotions gradually settled under his comfort.
Her cheek was pressed to his warm chest. She could hear his heartbeat–strong, steady–one beat after another, like the most effective sedative.
When her awareness returned, Amelia realized what she’d just done.

Mason released her without fuss, then used his arms to lift her–cast and all–out of the cramped closet. Turning, he laid her gently onto the soft bed.
Freed from the closet, Amelia’s thoughts were a mess.
She curled up anxiously on the bed, twisting the edge of the blanket in her hands as she apologized in a rush.
“I’m sorry… Mason, I didn’t mean it. Don’t misunderstand…”
She was afraid he’d think she’d thrown herself at him on purpose–afraid he’d judge her like the Harlows did, assume she was calculating.
But the cold words she expected never came.
Mason only stood silently at the bedside, then suddenly clasped her wrist when she tried to shrink back.
Panic flickered in Amelia’s chest–she didn’t know what he was about to do.
“Mason…”
With that same motion, he gently pressed her back down, guiding her to lie flat again.
Amelia was flustered, her heart pounding wildly.
But just when she thought he was about to cross a line….
