Zach slowly opened his cloudy eyes. His gaze rested on Mason and Amelia for a moment before settling on Amelia’s foot.

He waved at her and said in a hoarse voice, Come here, young lady. Sit here.”

With Mason’s support, Amelia carefully sat down on a small wooden stool beside the rocking chair.

Zach reached out his dry hand and placed it on Amelia’s wrist. He closed his eyes and began to check her pulse.

Time passed slowly. The courtyard grew so quiet that only the rustle of leaves in the wind and the old man’s faint breathing could be heard.

Amelia was so nervous that her heart felt like it was stuck in her throat. Mason stood nearby, frowning slightly as he watched Zach’s face closely, not missing a single change in his expression.

After a long while, Zach finally withdrew his hand, opened his eyes, and let out a long sigh.

Instead of speaking about Amelia’s condition, he turned his gaze to Mason. Mr. Everett, I remember you. Two years ago, when the village repaired the road, you donated a large sum without hesitation and even helped connect us with people outside. Our whole village remembers that kindness.

That’s why I promised back then that I would treat Evan for you.”

Mason gave a slight nod. You’re too kind, Mr. Preston.”

But,Zach continued, his tone shifting, a hint of helplessness in his eyes, this old body of mine doesn’t have much time left. With the strength I have left, I can only treat one more person. After that, I’m afraid I won’t be able to hold the needles again.

His eyes moved between Amelia and Mason before settling on Mason’s face. So tell me, who do you want me to treat, Evan or this young lady?

The air froze.

Before Mason could react, Amelia spoke almost at once. Then I won’t be treated. Mr. Preston, please treat Evan instead.

How could she take away Evan’s chance to stand again just because of her own injury?

Afraid that Mason might waver because of her, Amelia looked at him with clear, determined eyes.

Mason’s throat moved slightly.

At that moment, the old man, who had been sitting with halfclosed eyes, suddenly lifted the corners of his mouth in a rare smile.

You’re a kind and honest lady,” Zach said.

Then he turned to Kaia. But there’s no need to worry so much. This old body can only give its all for one more person, that’s true. But this girl’s leg injury is not a difficult case.

If you trust us, let Kaia handle it. She’s followed me for over ten years. She can manage an injury like this.

Amelia froze.

She instinctively turned to look at the quiet girl who had been standing nearby like a cool shadow.

Kaia’s expression didn’t change. When she met Zach’s gaze, her eyes were calm and steady, without surprise or fear, showing quiet confidence.

Mason didn’t hesitate at all.

Almost the moment Zach finished speaking, Mason nodded slightly at Kaia. Then I’ll trouble you, Ms.

Preston.

Kaia nodded in reply and said to them, Please follow me. We’ll go to the main hall.

Mason stepped forward and naturally offered his arm to Amelia so she could stand.

Leaning on his arm, Amelia followed Kaia with a limp. Yet a strange feeling rose in her chest.

Was all of thistoo smooth?

On the way here, Mason had said that Zach had a difficult temper and rarely saw outsiders, let alone treated them.

She had even prepared herself to be turned away.

But aside from the harsh choice at the start, everything else had gone smoothly.

Kaia led them into the main hall of the old house.

The room was simply furnished. An old set of rosewood tables and chairs sat inside. A bold piece of calligraphy hung on the wall. Along one side stood a tall row of medicine cabinets.

The air was filled with a stronger scent of herbs than in the courtyard, calm and soothing.

Sit here,Kaia said, pointing to a chair with a backrest. Then she turned to Mason. Mr. Everett, please wait outside for a moment.

Mason replied with a soft Mm,gave Amelia a long, steady look full of silent reassurance, then turned and left, closing the heavy wooden door behind him.

Amelia guessed he had gone to speak with Zach about Evan’s condition.

Her eyes followed his tall figure until the door fully shut and cut him from view.

Hold out your hand.

Kaia’s cool voice pulled Amelia back to the present.
