Chapter 239 Let’s Go to Sleep
So that was it.
No wonder she had misunderstood so badly.
Mason stopped talking.
The warm, sweet moment from before vanished all at once. The air turned cold and tense.
Amelia peeked up at him. Mason’s face showed nothing, but his eyes flashed with a sharp, icy light.
“It seems Tim still doesn’t have enough work.
“It’s time to give him some overtime.”
The second Mason said Tim’s name, Amelia knew that the man was in serious trouble.
She drew her shoulders in, feeling strangely guilty, and didn’t dare meet Mason’s eyes again.

Even though the truth was clear and the shadow called “Phoebe” had finally disappeared, Amelia still felt a small trace of doubt.
“So… Ms. Jewell was just a misunderstanding?”
She paused, as if using all the courage she had. “She doesn’t mean anything special to you?”
The moment the words left her mouth, Amelia almost forgot how to breathe.
Hearing her question again, the sharp cold around Mason softened into a helpless, amused smile.
How much proof would it take for her to believe that, in his eyes and in his heart, there was only her?
Mason gave a quiet sigh.
“Amelia.”
He called her name.
“Who’s special to me…” He dragged the words out on purpose, his eyes bright and steady as they held her nervous gaze. “Can you really not feel it at all?”
The meaning in his eyes was so clear. That almost overwhelming focus gave an answer she was hardly brave enough to accept.
“I…” Amelia opened her mouth.
Her heart pounded like it was about to jump out. The warmth she had just managed to calm came rushing back even stronger, making her head spin.
She couldn’t bring herself to speak.
Because she saw a dangerous spark flickering in Mason’s eyes.

If she dared to say no–or gave an answer he didn’t like–he would show her exactly what “special” really
meant.
Her instincts took over.
She lowered her eyes, avoiding his burning stare. Her mind raced, searching for a safe topic to break the heavy tension.
“Um… It’s getting pretty late!” Her voice even shook. “We should probably go to sleep!”
The moment she said it, she regretted it.
In a moment like this, the words “go to sleep” sounded like a whole different kind of invite.
Sure enough, she saw Mason blink, then let out a deep, pleased laugh.
“Okay.”
He actually agreed, the smile in his eyes growing, full of teasing warmth.
Then he slowly stood up, and the pressure around them finally eased a little.
“You sleep here.” He pointed to the bed beneath Amelia. “I’ll take the couch outside.”
Amelia went stiff, her mind blank for a moment.
He was going to sleep on the couch?
Mason kept speaking calmly. “After all, I can’t keep saying ‘I couldn’t help it‘ as an excuse to take advantage of you.”
At that moment, Amelia didn’t know where her bravery came from. Just as he turned to leave, she reached out without thinking and grabbed the edge of his jacket.
The cool feel of the cloth made her heart jump.
Mason stopped and looked down at her pale, slim fingers holding onto his coat.
“What’s wrong?”
Amelia’s face burned even hotter.
She knew her behavior right now was childish and a little silly.
But she just didn’t want him to leave.
Just thinking about him lying on that cold, hard couch while she took up the only soft bed made her chest feel tight.
And besides…

“But…” She gathered her courage and spoke in a small voice, trying to defend herself and find a reason to keep him. “It’s really cold out there, and it’s still raining. It’ll be even colder later tonight.”
After she finished, she felt the reason still wasn’t strong enough. So she tightened her grip just a little.
She shifted toward the edge of the bed and quietly made space, giving up more than half of it. Her actions sent the clearest invitation.
Under the warm, dim light, her clear eyes looked soft and wet, as if they were filled with water, as she gazed at him.
Mason finally turned back.
He lowered his head and watched her with calm, easy interest.
It felt as if every small thought she tried to hide was plainly seen by him.
Amelia grew nervous under his again.
