She looked away and did not dare to meet his eyes again. She had to come up with an even worse excuse.

And I don’t really know this place well. If I’m alone, I think turning off the lights might be a littlescary.

Mason calmly asked, Really? You’re scared of the dark?

He stopped on purpose and watched her give a shy nod, clearly embarrassed.

So if I sleep beside you, you won’t be afraid anymore?

Amelia froze, her throat tightening, not knowing what to say.

When he saw her stunned silence and her face turning bright red, Mason knew that his little test was enough for today.

If he pushed any further, this shy little bunny would run off and hide for good.

The playful look in his eyes disappeared, replaced by a gentle warmth.

He reached over, gently pulled his jacket edge from her hand, and picked up the damp towel.

Alright. Get some rest.

Be brave. Even if you feel scared, it’s only for tonight.

Once the rain stops tomorrow, I’ll take you home.

With that, he turned and walked to the door, neat and firm in his steps.

Is he really leaving?

A strange wave of disappointment washed over her.

Amelia couldn’t explain how she felt.

To her, Mason was like a skilled hunter. He laid out tempting bait, slowly drawing her closer.

Just as she was about to reach for it, he pulled it away, leaving her hanging in between, unsure, restless, and uncomfortable.

Now, she was alone on the bed.

There was plenty of space. She didn’t have to worry about sitting too close to him or about anything awkward or confusing happening.

She should have felt more relaxed.

So why did her heart feel even more empty?

The whole room seemed larger after Mason left.

Yet everything still reminded her of himhis fresh, clean scent, his calm and deep voice, his focused eyes. It felt like he was still there, filling the air.

Amelia sat on the bed for a long while before finally lying down.

She pulled the blanket over herself and turned off the small lamp by the bed.

The room went dark in an instant.

Just then, her fingers brushed against something soft, made of fabric.

She froze for a second. In the weak light coming through the window, she saw it was Mason’s jacket.

The one he had taken off earlier. Somehow, it had been thrown near the end of the bed, and when he left, he didn’t pick it up.

Did he forget it or leave it on purpose?

Amelia’s heart skipped a beat.

The darkness hid her well and somehow gave her a sudden bit of courage.

She hesitated for a few seconds. Then, without really knowing why, she reached out and gently pulled the jacket closer, placing it beside her pillow.

She turned onto her side and pressed her cheek against the soft cloth.

Mason’s scent surrounded her right away.

It felt like he was still there.

Like he had never left.

This small, imagined feeling of company brought her a calm she had never felt before.

She fell asleep without dreaming.

In the morning, Amelia woke up to clear birdsong.

She opened her eyes. Bright sunlight poured through the gaps in the window and painted soft shapes on the floor.

The rain had stopped.

The mountain air felt freshly washed.

Amelia opened the window and took a deep breath. It felt cool, clean, and soothing.

Outside in the yard, the ground that had been soaked by rain last night was already half dry. Zach stood nearby, slowly watering his flowers and bushes.

Because the river had risen, some water had spilled into the village the night before.

When the water went down in the morning, people caught many fresh, lively fish. They even brought a big

After washing up, Amelia went downstairs and smelled a rich, fresh scent coming from the kitchen.

Kaia came out of the kitchen carrying a heavy pot. When she saw Amelia, she smiled. Ms. Harlow, you’re awake! You came just in time for breakfast.

The meal was simplefresh mountain vegetables, freshly made bread, and a pot of fish chowder.

At the table sat Amelia and Kaia, along with Zach and Mason, who were already there.

Feeling a little awkward, Amelia took the seat across from Mason. She quietly glanced at him. He looked calm and distant, just like always, as if all the tension and mixed feelings from last night had only existed in her imagination.

Kaia scooped a bowl of fish chowder for Amelia. The fish chowder was creamy and pale, topped with a few bright green onions, and smelled wonderful.

Have some. It’s fish chowder. Really good.

Amelia thanked her, lifted a spoon, and took a sip.

The soup was rich and smooth, with no fishy smell at allonly a clean, gentle sweetness that filled her mouth.
