Kain acted as if she didn’t notice Amelia’s shock and continued with a smile. “Grandpa said this kind of river fish chowder helps wounds heal faster.
“It just has a lot of tiny bones and very troublesome to prepare. I never thought Mr. Everett would be so patient to remove every single one.”
Suddenly, the spoon in Amelia’s hand felt extremely heavy, and the fish chowder in her bowl seemed burning hot.
She slowly raised her head and looked at Mason sitting across from her.
He behaved as if nothing had happened, calmly eating his breakfast.
When he sensed her stare, his eyes lifted to meet hers. His voice was low and steady,
“I’m glad you like it.”
Just those simple words sent gentle ripples through Amelia’s heart.
Steam drifted up from the bowl, blurring her vision.
She lowered her head quickly and stared into the bowl, her face growing hot.
For the rest of breakfast, Amelia kept her head down. She didn’t dare look at Mason again.
She could still feel his calm gaze fall on her from time to time. It wasn’t forceful, but she couldn’t ignore it either.

Only after breakfast was over and the last of the soup was gone did Amelia finally relax and
breathe easier.
Soon after, the quiet mountain yard was broken by the sound of an engine.
A black SUV stopped on the path near the village entrance. A sharp, well–dressed man stepped out, walked to the gate, and bowed politely to Mason inside the yard.
Leaning on her crutch, Amelia left with Mason, saying goodbye to Zach and Kaia.
Zach was still smiling warmly. He patted Mason on the shoulder, then turned to Amelia with gentle eyes. “Amelia, since your leg is hurt, you really need to rest well. Come back to the mountains when you feel better. Let Kaia take you to pick berries.”
Amelia felt warm inside and nodded seriously. “Thank you. I’ll come again for sure.”
Kaia walked over, supported her lightly, and spoke in a kind voice. “Ms. Harlow, don’t forget- you still need needle treatment. Come by every couple of days. I’ll do the treatment. After three or four sessions, it should feel much better.”
“Alright. I won’t forget,” Amelia replied sincerely.
After a brief goodbye, Amelia, helped by Mason, slowly headed toward the car waiting at the village entrance.
On the way back, the new driver focused on the road in the front seat. The back seat was roomy and private.
Mason reached out and pressed a button. A dark divider slowly slid up, separating the front and back of the car.
The car fell into silence.
The warmth from the night before still lingered, leaving Amelia’s thoughts messy and confused.
She didn’t know how to act around the man next to her, so she turned toward the window and pretended to focus on the green mountains rushing by.
Yet out of the corner of her eye, she kept sneaking glances at him.
Mason leaned back in his seat, his eyes half shut. The sharp lines of his profile stood out in the light coming through the window.
A faint crease showed between his brows. It was obvious he hadn’t slept well on the couch last night.

Amelia didn’t want to bother him. She looked away, straightened her back, and tried to make herself smaller, hoping he could sleep properly.
The car rolled along the twisting mountain road. She wasn’t sure how much time had passed. Just as the quiet started to make her sleepy, her right shoulder suddenly sank.
Amelia stiffened at once. Even her breathing paused for a moment.
She slowly turned her head and saw that Mason was fast asleep.
As the car gently swayed, his head naturally leaned against her shoulder.
His breathing was warm, calm, and steady.
Amelia’s whole body went stiff, like a pulled string. She didn’t dare move at all, afraid that even the smallest motion might wake him.
But staying like this was very uncomfortable for her.
She hesitated for a moment, then made a brave decision.
She moved a little closer to him.
She wanted him to sleep more comfortably.
When the space between them grew smaller, she could feel the warmth coming from his body.
Even through their clothes, it felt strong and hot.
