As she spoke, Amelia looked up at Ethan with a soft, loving gaze.

Ethan did seem a little moved. His eyes softened as he looked back at her.

Fiona, standing nearby, watched everything but didn’t show any expression on her face.

She seemed genuinely interested and kept asking, following Hannah’s words, “Really? So many complicated fusion dishes like this. That must have taken a lot of work. I’d guess it took you at least half a day to prepare all this.”

Her words sounded like praise for Hannah’s cooking and effort.

Hannah’s heart lifted. She thought her thoughtful, hardworking act had finally impressed the toughest person in the house.

She quickly tried to look humble, shaking her head slightly, but the small smile on her lips still gave her away. “It’s really nothing. Ethan works so hard, and he still takes care of both of us. Cooking a few dishes for him is no big deal. As long as he enjoys it, I’m happy.”

She thought Fiona would now look at her with approval.

Fiona said coldly, “So, you skipped work today just to fuss over these dishes at someone else’s house?”

“N–no!” Hannah quickly waved her hands, panicked. “Fiona, I took leave!”

“Leave?” Fiona repeated the word slowly. “Right now, the company is busier than ever, and yet- well, you seem free enough to take time off whenever you feel like it.

“Ethan let you work at the office and gave you a salary far above your level so you could learn something and eventually stand on your own. Not so you could take the family’s money, slack off, and spend all your energy looking for shortcuts.”

“Or do you think Ethan let you work at the office just to give you a free paycheck?”

Hannah’s cheeks immediately flushed red, and she lowered her head.

Ethan couldn’t watch anymore.

He felt Fiona’s words were too harsh.

Fiona’s sharp expression finally softened a little.

She picked up the fork, took a small serving of vegetables, and put them on her plate.

Then, she said flatly, “Oh, I see.”

Hannah quietly breathed a sigh of relief and looked at Ethan gratefully.

“But since you’re competing, do it properly. Use your own skills to earn a good ranking–bring honor to the Rowes, and to yourself as well.

“Don’t always look for shortcuts or assume Ethan will always cover for you. My family doesn’t support lazy people, and we certainly don’t support useless ones.”

Fiona’s words sounded like encouragement, but every sentence was really a sharp warning.

Hannah didn’t dare argue. She could only keep her head down and reply quietly, “Yes, Fiona. I understand.”

It seemed the storm had finally passed.

The mood at the dinner table was still heavy, but at least things looked calm on the surface.

Ethan quietly started eating, too.

But Hannah felt like she was on edge.

Just when she thought this long, tense dinner was almost over, Fiona, who had been quietly sipping her soup, spoke again casually.
