“Ethan, no matter how much you help, you’re still an outsider. It’s always safer and more reliable to find her a real family to rely on.”
Ethan only paused for a moment, thinking.
He murmured, “Is that so? Then my mom should be careful about who she introduces. What i the person isn’t trustworthy or treats Isla badly? That could hurt them both.”
Hannah felt like she’d fallen into an ice–cold room–her whole body went numb.
He wasn’t forbidding her from having a blind date.
He was acting more like a caring friend, calmly giving advice for her future happiness.
Fiona noticed the fleeting sadness pass across Hannah’s face and let a tiny, almost invisible smile curl at her lips.
“Your mom knows what she’s doing. Besides, we never forced Hannah. She agreed to meet him on her own. After all, we’re not her family. We can’t make decisions for her life.”
Hannah’s chest tightened so badly she could barely breathe.
She forced a bitter smile and said in a hoarse voice, “I know, Fiona. You and Grace are just looking out for me. That guy, Jace, seems okay. I’ll give it a chance and get to know him better.”
The night grew darker. The headlights outside the villa cut through the quiet darkness, then disappeared again.
Fiona had already left, but her words lingered.
“Ethan, you’re a man and a husband. When problems happen at your family, you can’t just wait for someone else to fix them. Amelia is a good girl. She’s upset. You need to check on her more, spend more time with her.”
Ethan stood by the front door, a deep tiredness washing over him.
He knew he should go to her, but just thinking of Amelia’s cold, distant expression irritated him.
Still, he agreed quickly, “Okay, Grandma. I got it.”
But the promise was mostly meant to calm her down. He didn’t really mean it.
After seeing Fiona off, Ethan turned back to the living room.

Hannah hadn’t gone to her room. She sat alone on the couch, her small frame looking fragil under the soft glow of the crystal chandelier.
When she heard his footsteps, she slowly lifted her head, her eyes red and swollen, full of tea
“Ethan…” Her voice was thick with sniffles. “Does Fiona not like me living here?”
She asked carefully.
Ethan walked over and sat down on the couch beside her, letting out a sigh.
He said gently, “Don’t overthink it. My grandma just talks bluntly. She says what she thinks, b she doesn’t mean any harm.”
He avoided Hannah’s searching gaze, pulled out a tissue, and handed it to her.
“She just … wants our family life to stay simple. She doesn’t want too many complications.”
Hannah took the tissue but didn’t wipe her tears. She just held it tightly in her hands.
She lowered her head, her shoulders trembling slightly, and choked out, “I know. I’ve caused you all trouble. Maybe I should move out with Isla tomorrow…”
“What are you saying?!” Ethan frowned immediately, cutting her off. “I promised to take care o you both. I won’t break that promise. Isla still needs a stable place to live. If you move out now, where would you even go?”
His firm tone gave Hannah a little comfort.
That was exactly what she needed to hear.
“But Grandma and your mom probably think I’m a burden. They probably think I have some hidden motives…”
“They don’t,” Ethan said firmly, cleverly changing the topic.
“Aren’t you about to enter that design competition?”
He hesitated for a moment, then encouraged her.
“I know you’re talented. I believe in you. If you do well in the competition, prove your skills, my mom and grandma will see it. They’ll be proud of you and change how they think about you.”
Hannah’s heart sank a little, but a spark of hope immediately lit up her face.
She nodded firmly.

Ethan thought this was a perfect plan.
He stood up and patted her shoulder. “Alright, it’s late. Get some rest. Don’t overthink things.”
After saying that, he turned and went straight upstairs to his study.
Hannah stayed on the couch, watching his figure disappear around the corner of the stairs. The feeling of fragility and warmth she had just felt vanished in an instant.
Back in her room, as soon as she closed the door, her phone buzzed.
The caller ID showed Edison.
She took a deep breath and pressed the answer button.
“Hey, Hannah! Are you resting yet?” Edison’s cheerful voice came through the line.
“Not yet, Edison. Is something up?”
“Of course it’s something good!” Edison sounded mysterious. “Do you have time tomorrow? I want to take you to meet my friends.”
