Chapter 269 It’s Not My Money Anyway

Back then, Mason just glanced at it and spoke like it was no big deal. “You can have it, too. Just find out who owns it and buy it.”
Too bad…
Amelia didn’t have that kind of money back then.
And now, she had even less.
She thought the painting would stay hidden in some old castle in Eropal forever. She never expected to see it again like this, years later.
It was so close, yet still out of reach.
Amelia’s fingers absentmindedly brushed against the glossy paper of the catalog.
She told herself not to want things that didn’t belong to her.
In the end, she slowly closed the catalog. Her face returned to its usual calm, as if the who got lost in memories just now wasn’t her.

The music faded out, and the lights in the hall dimmed. Only a few spotlights remained, shining neatly on the elegant auction stage.
Under everyone’s attention, the host in a formal gown stepped forward and announced that the charity auction had officially begun.
The first few items were just pottery pieces and small jewelry items from local designers. They were nice, but not big collector items, so people bought them just to support the charity.
The atmosphere was pretty chill, like a warm–up for a big game.
At Ethan’s table, Hannah sat next to him, pretending to look through the auction catalog, but her heart was racing.
Her fingers slid over one expensive item after another while trying to figure out how to get Ethan to willingly spend a huge amount of money on her.
She didn’t just want an expensive gift; she wanted to flex in front of Amelia and show everyone she was the one Ethan chose.
While she was thinking, a real estate guy who knew Ethan leaned over and joked.
“Mr. Rowe, why so quiet? All the good stuff is being snatched up,” he said, looking back and

forth between Ethan and Hannah with a smirk. “Aren’t you going to buy something for the lovely Ms. Gray?”
Then, he glanced at Amelia on purpose just to stir the pot. “Or are you trying to play it safe because your wife is sitting right there watching?”
Ethan froze.
Almost without thinking, he looked over at Hannah.
Hannah seemed startled by the comment. She quickly looked up from the catalog, her face instantly filled with just the right amount of panic and helplessness. She waved her hands. “Ethan, don’t worry about me. Everything here is so expensive. I don’t deserve any of it.”
Ethan had never been interested in this auction to begin with. He just wanted this annoying event to end as soon as possible.
But now, with people pushing him and Hannah acting so considerate, the anger and competitiveness Amelia had stirred up in him flared again.
It was a charity gala. He had to spend money, or he’d be a joke in the business circle tomorrow.
And who he spent the money on would send a very clear message.
He was just about to ask Hannah what she wanted–use money to shut everyone up–when the host announced the next item.
“Next up, we have a rare pair of white chalcedony earrings,” the host said. “They are smooth, flawless, and perfectly represent classic beauty. The starting bid is 300,000 dollars, with increases of at least 50,000 dollars. Bidding starts now!”
As soon as the host finished talking, Tim didn’t hesitate. He held up his paddle and called out, “Four hundred thousand.”
Ethan knew it instantly–Tim was bidding on those earrings for Amelia!
She wanted them!
Without even thinking, Ethan threw his own paddle up a second later. “Five hundred thousand.”
When Amelia heard that familiar voice, she stopped while whispering to Amanda.
She frowned, feeling totally annoyed.
Seriously?

She had picked the most low–key item in the catalog just to be polite, and she still ended up clashing with Hannah?
Ethan must be bidding for her.
The idea of wearing the same earrings as Hannah made her skin crawl.
She didn’t want them that badly to begin with. Now, she wanted nothing to do with them.
“Stop bidding,” she whispered to Tim. “Let them have it. Bad luck.”
But Tim wasn’t having it.
The order he got was simple: if Amelia liked something, he bid.
Who was bidding against him, and how high the price went, weren’t his problem.
“Don’t worry about it,” Tim said, his competitive side coming out. “If he wants to fight, fine. It’s not my money anyway.”
