“Seriously, though,” Nichole leaned over and whispered to Amelia. “It’s such a shame Ms. Gray didn’t stay to see this. I bet her face would’ve looked even crazier than when she fainted.”
At Nichole’s teasing, Amelia just covered her mouth and smiled helplessly. She didn’t join in to mock Hannah.
Whether Hannah was actually sick or just faking it didn’t matter to her anymore.
Tonight, Hannah wasn’t the star of the show anymore.
The judges‘ introduction ended quickly. The bright lights softened, and gentle music played again, signaling that the charity gala was finally coming to an end.
Guests began leaving in small
groups.
With Amanda’s help, Amelia carefully avoided the crowd and slipped out of the noisy ballroom through a side door.
The night breeze felt cool against her face, helping her calm down after all the drama.
The parking lot was bright, with rows of fancy cars everywhere.
Amelia immediately spotted a familiar black Maybach parked in the most obvious spot nearby.
The window was halfway down. She could vaguely see the sharp profile of the man in the driver’s seat. He was looking at his phone, maybe working, or maybe just waiting.
The moment Amanda saw the car, she gave Amelia an “I get it” look.
She let
go of Amelia’s arm, winked, and whispered, “Mission accomplished! I’m catching a ride with Mr. Clem. Get home safe!”
Then, she turned and jogged toward the back rows, quickly hopping into Tim’s car.
Watching them make their escape, Amelia didn’t know whether to laugh or sigh.
She stood there for a second, hesitating, but eventually walked over to the Maybach.
The car door opened right away.
She bent down, got in, and sat down in the soft leather seat.
“How’s your foot?”

Mason’s eyes stayed on his phone, but his voice was low and gentle.
“Not bad,” Amelia said softly, carefully positioning her injured ankle. “I didn’t walk much tonight.”
“Mm,” he murmured, set his phone aside, and started the car.
The city lights blurred past the window, casting shadows across Mason’s sharp features.
Amelia wanted to ask him–about the painting, about why he bought it that way.
But every time she tried to speak, she stopped herself.
It felt too awkward.
They weren’t at the point where she could just demand answers from him.
So, she kept her mouth shut and stayed quiet the whole way back.
The car smoothly entered the estate.
When Mason half–supported, half–carried Amelia into the living room, she froze.
Right there, on the main wall of the living room, was a painting.
It was the one from the auction.
“Do you like it?” Mason’s voice came from behind her.

Amelia snapped out of it and turned around, looking up into his deep eyes. “Y–you really bought it because I like it?”
Mason met her shocked gaze and nodded without hesitation.
“You said it before,” he said. He looked at her with such focus it felt like she was drowning in his gaze. “I remembered.”
Amelia felt her heart get hit hard by those words.
A wave of heat rushed to her eyes, and Amelia’s vision blurred with tears.
Just as her emotions were about to burst, Mason suddenly bent down. One arm slid under her knees, the other behind her back, scooping her up into a bridal carry.
“Ah!” she gasped, instinctively wrapping her arms around his neck.
He ignored her panic, carried her straight to the couch, and set her down. Then he lifted her

His movements were gentle and focused.

His lashes cast shadows on his face, and under the warm light, the lines of his profile looked especially soft.
Amelia watched him quietly.
It felt like being cherished and protected.
A sweetness she hadn’t felt in a long time slowly filled her chest.
Meanwhile, on the other side…
The ambulance had barely left the hotel when Hannah, who was supposed to be passed out in the back, slowly opened her eyes.
“You’re awake? Are you okay?”
Ethan stared at her in disbelief.
Hannah saw the worry on his face and felt a pang of guilt. Her face turned a shade of red that wasn’t from a fever. She looked away and mumbled, “Ethan, I’m so sorry…”
She paused, her voice barely audible. “Actually, I faked the fainting.”
Ethan froze.
He wasn’t stupid. He understood almost instantly.
