Chapter 292 She Was Still Ethan’s Wife

She had turned too quickly and hadn’t noticed the edge of the couch behind her. Off balance, she let out a startled cry as she started to fall backward.
In a flash, Mason’s long arm shot out, strong and precise, catching her delicate waist and pulling her back with a firm tug.
The world
spun.
Amelia tumbled straight into his embrace.
The position was impossibly intimate.
She ended up half–kneeling, half–sitting on his lap. Instinctively, she grabbed onto his shoulders to stabilize herself.
Beneath her hands, his shoulder muscles were taut and warm, alive with power, so hot it made her fingertips curl.
His scent–raw, dominant masculinity–flooded her senses with every inhale.
“Why is your face so red?”
His deep voice sounded right by her ear.
Amelia finally realized how compromising her position was and scrambled to move, hands and legs flailing.
“I–I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to…”
But the large hand on her waist tightened suddenly, while the other pressed down on her back, keeping her pressed even closer.
“Don’t move.” His voice carried a husky edge that made her freeze.
She could feel his heartbeat, strong and steady, through the pressure against her.
She slowly lifted her head, meeting his dark, fathomless

The thought struck her like lightning, shattering her mind with alarm.

Reason screamed no, but her body felt paralyzed, frozen in place.

The distance between their lips shrank, close enough that she could see the long, thick sweep of his eyelashes…
And just as the heat of his breath threatened to touch her, Amelia shot up her hand, pressing it firmly against her mouth.
Through the back of her hand, her soft lips brushed something warm.
Mason paused, his eyes narrowing slightly, brow lifted in silent questioning.
“No,” Amelia mumbled, voice muffled.
She didn’t dare meet his gaze, staring instead at the firm line of his jaw as she summoned courage to explain, “My divorce papers … they don’t take effect for another three days.”
Legally, she was still Ethan’s wife.
She couldn’t allow herself to add another ambiguous stain to a marriage that hadn’t fully ended.
Mason blinked, then let out a small, amused chuckle.
“I don’t care.”
He spoke the three words with authority, then grasped her wrist, effortlessly removing her hand from his lips.
With nothing in the way, he leaned down again.
“Mm!”
In a rush of panic, Amelia ignored all caution this time, pressing her hand over his mouth instead.
Her palm was soft, slightly cool, damp with nervous sweat, pressed firmly against his warm, thin lips.
“No!” she said, face burning red, shaking her head violently.
Mason watched her, the darkness in his eyes intensifying as her near–tearful desperation played
out.
Just then, a phone rang from the other side of the couch.
The moment shattered, instantly cooling the charged atmosphere.

Mason paused, a subtle crease appearing between his brows, clearly annoyed by the interruption.
Amelia, seizing the chance, wriggled free, tumbling back to a safe distance, her heart still hammering in her chest.
The tension dissipated. Mason stretched, glancing at the screen–it was a video call from his mother.
Out of the corner of his eye, he watched the petite figure fumbling with the medical kit, lips curling into a faintly amused smile.
Slowly, he picked up the phone and answered.
Behind Amelia, Nora’s voice suddenly rang out, full of shock and authority.
“Oh my, son! Why are you taking a video call shirtless at this hour?”
Then, Nora seemed to notice something else, another gasp following. “What’s wrong with arm? Why’s it wrapped up like that? Are you hurt?”
Amelia froze mid–motion.
Leaning back lazily against the couch, Mason’s tone remained calm and composed. “It’s nothing, Mom. Just a little scratch, no big deal.”
He subtly adjusted the phone angle, skillfully including Amelia in the frame.
Nora’s sharp eyes immediately caught on.
“Wait … isn’t that … Amelia?” Her voice went up in disbelief. “Amelia, what are you doing in Mason’s room?”
Amelia froze like a schoolgirl caught in the act.

She slowly turned to meet Mason’s amused gaze, unable to stop herself from shooting him a sharp, reproachful glare.
