Mason was definitely doing it on purpose!

But caught on the horns of a dilemma, Amelia could only grit her teeth, force a smile, and lean toward the camera, greeting politely, “Hello, Nora…”
Before Nora could ask anything else, she quickly explained, “Mason got hurt today saving me. I’m just here helping him change the bandages and take care of his arm.”
“Oh! I see!”
Nora drew out the last syllable meaningfully, her gaze piercing through the screen as if she could see right through Amelia.
The worry on her face instantly melted, replaced by quiet relief.
Then, as if remembering something, she suddenly waved toward someone nearby, grinning from ear to ear. “Evan, come over! You should talk to Mason for a bit and see how his arm’s doing. Oh, and Amelia’s here too!”
A calm, gentle male voice followed, laced with humor, “Mom, don’t scare her.”
Through the screen, a refined man in a wheelchair slowly entered the frame.
Evan looked slightly older, handsome, with features reminiscent of Mason’s but carrying a completely different aura.
If Mason was a sharp, gleaming blade, he was a warm, steady stone–quiet and composed.
When his eyes landed on the slightly intimate scene in front of him, he paused for a moment, then exchanged a look with Nora.
Amelia shifted uncomfortably, unsure where to place herself.
“Evan,” she greeted, barely daring to raise her eyes.
“Amelia, long time no see.” He nodded gently.
His
gaze briefly flicked to Mason’s arm, then nonchalantly shifted as he turned to ask Amelia with concern, “That boy Hayden didn’t give you any trouble after he returned, right?”
Mention of Hayden made Amelia relax slightly. She shook her head. “No, he’s very behaved. He just goes back to school now, so he can only come visit on weekends.”

As soon as the words left her mouth, Amelia realized what she’d just revealed.

Only weekends… which basically told Mason’s family that she was living with him now.
Sure enough, a deeper smile crossed Evan’s face, but he merely nodded, changing the subject, “I heard
you hurt your foot before. How’s it healing? Better now?”
The thoughtfulness of the question immediately brought Amelia back to the

past.
Before she could answer, Nora interjected, her tone sharp and teasingly accusatory toward her son, “Exactly! Your foot isn’t fully healed yet, and now you’ve created another injured person! Mason, tell me, did you take care of Amelia properly?”
“Nora, don’t blame Mason,” Amelia quickly explained to the camera. “My foot’s almost healed, so it’s fine. Mason’s been taking really good care of me. You don’t have to worry.”
As she spoke, she couldn’t help sneaking a glance at Mason.
He was lounging lazily, his dark eyes fixed on her with an intensity that made her stomach twist.
“What’s this video call really about?”
Mason’s voice cut through, cold and dismissive, interrupting the warm family interaction.
“Oh? So now you think your mom and brother are in the way?” Nora pretended to scold, but her smile was impossible to hide. “I just wanted to let you know we’ve got some paperwork to finish here. Your brother and I probably won’t be back for another ten days or so.”
“Okay.” Mason’s reply was curt, as if he wished they’d hang up immediately.
Nora, clearly aware of her son’s mind, didn’t rush. Instead, she turned her attention back to Amelia, her tone suddenly soft and sincere.
“Amelia, wait a little longer. If anyone treats you unfairly, you tell us after we come back. By then, no one–Mason included–can bully you again, understand?”
Her words washed over Amelia like a sudden wave of warmth, unannounced yet comforting.
The validation and protection she never got from Ethan’s or her own family were freely given here.
She wasn’t even officially part of the family yet, but they had already wrapped her under their wing, promising unwavering support.
Amelia’s eyes pricked with warmth.

She blinked hard, forcing the rising emotion back, and then smiled brightly at the screen. “Yes, thank you, Nora.”
The call finally ended.
The living room instantly fell silent.
Amelia didn’t want to stay a second longer.
She snapped the lid of the medical kit shut and, head lowered, prepared to leave.
“I’m heading back. Mason, rest early.”
But just two steps out, the man’s calm, measured voice stopped her.
“Amelia.”
He called out her name.
She froze mid–step, unwilling to turn around.
