Tim’s words stopped short when he noticed the strange mood in the private room.

Amelia was clearly keeping her distance.

Because the evening rain had cooled things down, Tim thoughtfully added a local specialty, a charcoal–heated fondue.

Red coals burned under the pot. Inside, a rich cheese broth bubbled and steamed.

The rising white mist blurred their faces. It softened the mood too, quietly easing the awkwardness in the room.

The four of them sat around the steaming pot. Tim and Lily traded playful jabs. The atmosphere soon warmed up again.

“Oh, right, Amelia,” Tim said casually. He used his fork to dip a slice of steak in and out of the cheese. “What are you planning to do tomorrow? Got anything in mind?”

Amelia was taking small bites of the broccoli Mason had silently cooked for her. She shook her head. “Not yet.”

“Perfect!” Tim’s eyes lit up, clearly prepared for this. “How about a road trip? I just checked; there’s a huge highland lake less than thirty miles from the city. This time of year, the ice shouldn’t be fully melted yet. Half ice, half water. The view should be amazing.”

Lily’s eyes lit up as soon as she heard that.

Compared to being packed shoulder to shoulder inside the city, she had always preferred wide, open scenery and fresh air.

She nodded in agreement. Then her eyes shifted between Mason and Tim. She asked on purpose, “So, Amelia and I are having a road trip. You two are busy; are you going to discuss business?”

“Hehe,” Tim chuckled, clearly trying to please Lily. He quickly poured Lily a full glass of water and said in a suggestive tone, “I think Mr. Everett wouldn’t mind. He can take a couple of days off for himself too.”

The meaning was obvious. All four of them would go together.

The timing felt right, and the idea sounded tempting.

Amelia was torn.

Under the table, her fingers clenched the hem of her clothes. She shot Lily a sharp look, signaling desperately with her eyes.

Lily caught the hint and suddenly remembered. She groaned in frustration. “Oh–wait. A road trip won’t work.”

Both men turned to look at her.

“It’d be too crowded with five people,” Lily added quickly.

“Five?” Tim frowned and counted in the air with his fork. “One, two, three, four, where’s the fifth person coming from?”

Lily cleared her throat. Her expression grew awkward. She glanced at Mason, whose face remained calm, then forced herself to explain. “Well, before you arrived, Amelia and I were walking around the city. We ran into a celebrity–his name’s Henry. We already agreed to take him out for tomorrow.”

To make it sound convincing, she emphasized the practical issue. “And because of his job, his look might be noticeable. It wouldn’t be convenient for him to be out in the open too much. A road trip would draw too much attention, so it’s probably not a good idea.”
